Mrs Braverman can hardly be held responsible for the forces in special measures before she became Home secretary, Greater Manchester Police 2020. How typical of contributors to this site to continue to blame somebody for something they haven't done even when it's mentioned in the piece the contributor quoted.

It’s all just words tho, isn’t it.
The 6 most under performing English Police Forces are in Special Measures. Which means Ms Braverman’s Department is running them. The Police are no longer in control of their own policy, unelected Bureaucrats in Westminster are.
So nice soundbite to the faithful but an own goal from Suella.

We'll see. The Home Secretary must have power over the police.
Will Mrs Braverman use that power?
She has. She has 6 of them under special measures.
I'm all for more crime fighting. The trouble is it usually means they focus on making the figures look better at all costs.

Ie concentrating on things where you can get an easy detection and conviction rate, e.g speeding, encouraging people to even bother reporting burglaries etc etc. That kind of stuff.
// Special measures is a status applied by regulators of public services in the UK to providers who fall short of acceptable standards.
It is the first time the Met – the UK’s largest police force – has been subject to this kind of oversight. The inspectorate said was the force had been placed in its “engage” process, which “provides additional scrutiny and support to help it make improvements”.
The watchdog placed Greater Manchester Police on the engage process in 2020 after it failed to report 80,000 crimes. //
The Home Sec has powers over the Met but not county police forces. They do have administrative control over such things as terms of service etc but not for the discipline of officers of county forces, which is the responsibility of the chief constable.

The Chief Constables are the problem.
Or at least a large part of it.
ZM,
Cleveland, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire Police Forces are under special measures.
Which means the Inspectorate of Policing, under the Home Office, are overseeing what they are doing.
// The Chief Constables are the problem. //

No one can become a Chief Constable without the approval of the Home Secretary.
Nothing will happen, as per usual !

Perhaps they are improving, gromit?
It took them decades to make them useless. It'll probably take time to make them fit for purpose again.
The Inspectorate of Policing, under the Home Office, always inspect and report on the efficiency and effectiveness of every police force maintained for a police area, constantly. This is not something which is specifically triggered by special measures.
Greater Manchester Police cut their crime figures by ignoring 80,000 burglaries.
Special measures over the Police means that the regulator can demand changes and present a plan, which the Police must comply with.

Doubt Mrs B has approved any yet, gromit.
Doing nothing can't be the answer. (unless, of course, you like the way they operate now. Some do.)
Indeed it does. But it does not mean they are just ‘overseeing what they are doing’ as you claimed earlier.
Well it's about time someone put a rocket up their Aprils. All they seem to do these days is high profile stuff and trawling twitface in case someone uses a non approved word.
Spicerack,
I am not saying ‘do nothing’.

I am saying Braverman’s statement is disingenuous.

I live in Greater Manchester, which is Policed by one of the worst performing forces in England. When I report a crime, I want it investigated. GMP were found to be not even acknowledging being told of a crime, so not bothering to attempt to solve it.
Special measures is a slap on the wrist. Failure on this scale needs a complete rethink, and wholesale reform of the service.
