My partner is from South Africa and her children are there. We used to go there every winter but obviously because of Covid this did not happen last winter. She has now booked to go back next month - but I did not. Now she is having doubts about going. Friends there, and in other parts of the world, think coming now is a very bad idea. In 'normal' times living in South...

Inevitably.
TTT - it is. And has been for a while.

My heart is breaking for the land of my birth!

My fear is growing for my family incl parents who live there.

What we see on the news is just the tip of the iceberg.

eve, We have a lot of South Africans where I work and they seem to have pretty much resigned themselves to its downward spiral.
When the whole system collapses, and it will, China will call in the loans that have been lodged in foreign secret accounts and the South Africans will find that China owns vast tracts and resources. They will find themselves truly enslaved, and by a merciless master at that.
Yes I too realised that a long time ago. what's happening now is no surprise. I am glued to the videos and social media they are sending. It is so sad. My heart is aching. Im sure your colleagues feel the same. For some of your colleagues they may have family who are stuck there, (I only got out cos I married a brit ....for love btw not his passport)
Togo totally!!! Many predicted this years ago....why else wld china offer so much "assistance".
Just an aside ... but did you know that you were paying for this. They now have a pidgin translation for "readers" who may not(sarc) be paying for a licence. Tower of Babel indeed.

oh god my heart didnt bleed

one scene was like Brixton Spar being burnt down - but it was a suburb in South Africa. Big contrast to Mali ( furva norf) - arid desert burnt villages

up early - 0600 and was treated to some real Beeb Marxist propaganda on this subject

I rose up and penned Mad Marxist Beebstas - to the beeb
a bit like one of my posts - but better

Dear Sir,

what was wrong with R4 at 0600 this am?

One standard beeb tree hugger straight from uni - stuffed full of tired marxist dogma as good ideas die hard was on her high horse over - - - South Africa - and speaking to another marxist on site in South Africa. She was telling us like it is.

Zuma as any fule kno (a) is a rapist and has done 'state capture' and sold South Africa to the Guptas. Even some at the Beeb (b) are dimly aware: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-48980964.

he is now serving 15 m in the slammer. Others look on Zuma as a saviour at least as good as Mandela and on a par with Mbeki. The boys are demonstrating in various areas - and it is clear their demonstrations involve looting burning and killing in an excellent cause.

So what was the opinion of the South African correspondent ? She reminded me strongly of the loyal but innumerate journo at Mugabe's 90th (c) saying everyone welcomed his second 90 years. She didnt say then that everyone who didnt cheer Mugabe, didnt get their daily ration. They were hungry and cheered loudly.

The current South African demonstators we were told had a right to do this ( hem hem) and were demanding that the govt act to release Zuma(d). To show this was a chapter in the current anti-imperial struggle, she prolonged the final syllables to a wail - to freeeeee heeeeeem....Liberation beckoned with just one more burning tyre(e)

Demonstating against judicial decisions ( per se as we might say) is NOT really a right as the judges are meant to be independent. I admit that outside the GMC in London when that arch-quack was struck off ( Dr Wakeford) , his anti-vaxxer supporters sang outside - "we will over come". GMC is not a court of record. They did not burn shoot or loot anything. And the GMC was deaf to their song.(*)

But the govt reversing a judicial decision: where did that idea come from? South Africa of course ! Om Paul Kruger ( the little beeb tree hugger will ask in a gormless essex nasal whine- "Paul Who-ger? who he ven?")(e) during the 'years of anarchy' insisted that the volksraad ( legislature to you and me of the Dutch Republics) could interpret laws as to how the judges should judge. The Grundwet.

Not separating Legislature and judiciary is a bad mistake and directly led to the legal anarchy which precipitated war in Nov 1899. So Maleema has all the ideas to directly convert South Africa into a Marxist paradise - typical of the economic basket cases to the north - Zim and Zambia, 100 y later. The idea that an idea ( er Marxist liberation that is ! ) fails - why dont we do the experiment again and see if it still fails ? All they are going to do if it does, is walk north and catch a boat to Italy

I vote for much more turgid Marxist sludge - like early morning castor oil ! - forward the Beeb and the freedom movement in South Africa - you can do it!

(my name and or Pyotr Ped esq)

(*) 1762 - R v WIlkes, Mansfield insists he interpret the law alone without interference - tho the heavens fall - fiat justicia ruant coeli - it is where the phrase comes from. Nice to have a modern beeb re-interpretation tho

furva notes for standard Abers
(a) Molesworth - as eny fule know
(b) the beeb knows about state capture and allows a journo to praise Zuma - give the pretty little thing an interview wivda fella alone!
(c) an incredible woman who really did welcome the 2nd 90y ! even the Beeb wondered if listeners would take that seriously
(d) may be lawful there, certainly not here - that's why you dont see any
(e) wrong spelling - sozza reader. its 'Oom'. damn - Volksraad's German -
(e) winnie's fave weapon
(f) - Att Gen v Beeb - no 1 2001 - ( exp p GMC) is the standard case for contempt of court. GMC tried to have the Beeb committed and was surprised to be told that they were nt a court of record so no go. Demonstrators ALSO allowed....

(g) incredibly the Dutch republics passed laws saying the legislature could 'explain' their legislation to the judges. Chaos - the legislature just decided cases ( by their advice see?) - grundwet I think

(h) Julius Malema wants to do the whole "marxist nationalise everything - common owndership by the people!" experiment again doesnt he. Zim and Zam just show how NOT to do it - but by er golly he is gonna have another go! ( er mackeson advert)

( Bored in the dentists waiting room, abscess)
well it makes a difference to the usual foo posts innit?

and I do seem to have remarkable knowledge of Roman Dutch Law 1890-1900
Interpretation^^ Add about 30 million more "political refugees" to the expected totals. Imagine all those seekers of asylum from violent political reprisal running to the wicked Caucasian suppressors for salvation
foo!
I did say I thought they would all walk north and catch a boat to italy

so very little interpretation needed - oh can you be a sweetie and correct my Dutch ? I am sure it is volksrat - no idea of the plural - volksraten?

I did want to drag in the case where Kruger fires the Chief Justice summarily ( Kotze) - but it is here

god I had to memorise all this stuff for my international law exams

Robert E Brown case - not Robert E lee - no wonder I couldnt find it
No,i shouldnt think so.Since whitey was ousted from South Africa,South Africa has the lowest crime rate in the world, the lowest prison population in the world and no unemployment as such.It has also no racist crimes such as black people killing white people. It is a veritable paradise from what ive heard.
Are they taking the same roads as Cecil once did?
zuma goes to prison so they loot a mall, now to do with zuma, but an excuse to steal, not unlike riots in the states over georgy floyd, see the parallel...
I love SA and will happily go there again, pandemic and cat permitting.
There has always been lawlessness but I’ve always felt safe there.
Clover it is a beautiful country with resilient people! The country of my birth and still the home to my family.

For tourists it is generally safe …. And so cheap …. To LIVE there however is very different.
Also clover - the lawlessness of which you speak - has taken a extremely sinister turn. These riots and looting are extreme and will mean their own people will be affected. Have a look at social media - the mainstream news is reporting very little
According to family the looting of malls is quieter today. The factories are still burning tho
No surprises here. And its not just Rhodesia its following either.

Much of Africa has real problems.
