Today is the start of Eid , what will it mean to those communities ? It's going to be very hard for everyone

Today is the start of many things, not just eid. What is it anyway? Is it some kind of Scottish thing for mental health? Why is anyone asking about it? I've never heard of it.

Well I'm off to work soon (I'm a window cleaner - Burnley area) and I'll be in a predominantly Asian area.
Do I think the majority of my customers will stay out of each other's houses on their special day today?? Not a cat in hell's chance .... I wouldn't expect them to and to be honest, I don't think I would either, if I was told on Xmas eve I couldn't go to my parent's house .... having previously made all arrangements, etc ....

I live in North Manchester. Within a short distance of Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Burnley, Blackburn etc. And no, I haven't heard of it. I have asian friends. I've been to asian weddings, but I've never heard of eid.

10CS - not all Asians are Muslims. If your Asian friends ARE Muslims and haven't told you about Eid I doubt you know them very well.

To be fair, I'm never sure of the difference between Eid and Ramadan- although the local supermarkets used to have lots of special Eid sections at certain times which was a give away

FF Ramadan is a period of fasting, Eid is a celebration of the end of Ramadan.

well the saudis have said - do the pilgrimage next year and not this

so it is poss to change religious custom (the Koran stipulates a pilgrimage) but clearly how you do it is open to interpretation

I think practically it will depend on whether you know or not someone to have died form Covid
The nearness of the death reminds people of their own mortality

Today is a different eid from the one at the end of Ramadan (which was in May). It is in honour of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son to god and is considered the holier of the two.

Thanks Danny. I know Eid varies in timing-last year was late May, this year late July/early August.
I know Andy Burnham and the government had been considering this- I just wonder why they left it so late as it'll be too late for many to change plans now- food ordered/bought/cooked, extra beds borrowed, cars hired, journeys booked, etc. I know I'd have had this planned a week ago if I was organising a big family gathering
