As far as I am concerned, circumcision of boys is an entirely unnecessary operation, unless done for medical reasons. To say it is done for religious reasons just adds to the seriousness of the assault charge. Mally. I would like some choice in the matter....

As far as this case is concerned, the Doctor proceeded with the circumcision without the consent of the parents, and I fail to see why he has been let off without charge.

mikey, you get a BA and a BO (Bang on!) for that one.
Goodness !....thanks very much.

( just common sense to me ! )
Question Author
common sense to me too, sadly common sense does not apply where religion is involved.
I think any medical or parent performing or giving consent to this operation should be prosecuted for child abuse, unless of course it is for medical reasons.
Dr Balvinder Mehat says he believes that consent was given but nobody seems to have asked 'in what way?', leaving me wondering if eggshells lay all around during questioning.
I think that medical reasons and religious reasons are inextricably united in that the religious reasons i.e it promotes health and hygiene issues.
MallyJ is quite correct in that partners of circumcised males have a lower incidence of cervical cancer....surely that promotes good health.
Circumcised individuals have a much lower incidence of cancer of the penis .........surely a plus.
Certain conditions that of tight foreskin ( phimosis) and irretractable foreskin (paraphimosis) can be avoided.....surely a health benefit.

Circumcised individuals are less likely to suffer premature ejaculation......not a health benefit perhaps but certainly handy.

Mikey.......this is not to do with "common sense" it is do do with opinions of many people, religious and otherwise.
All very well sqad..however this child could never become a Morris dancer :-)
Circumcision was performed automatically on all baby boys in Australia. When my son was born there in 1967, I had to stop the surgeon from cutting him.

I wonder if it is still performed routinely out there?

ryzen, good point he could also never join the Labour party.
..or vote to stay in the E.U
In the case linked to, the problem seems to have been 'presumed' consent and that should not be allowed to happen.

The health issues are very interesting and certainly add to the discussion, each child's parents to decide.
There is an increasing movement within the Jewish community not to circumcise, none of my brothers are, and whilst the stats about cervical cancer are known, I wouldn't want my partner mutilated because of that.
Naomi - consent should always be given.
But it opens up a whole other kettle of fist with society today where grandparents mind their grandchildren and routinely take them to doctors etc - if the dr treating the child has to seek consent each time its a timewasting exercise is it not?
All make your own mind up but don't dismiss this is as just a religious procedure, about 60% at least of all boys are still circumcised in the USA irrelevant of religion.
31 July 2013 - The boy is circumcised when he is three months old. His mother later contacts social services.
24 November 2014 - The mother contacts Nottinghamshire Police

Islay makes a good point re. grandparents.

Why did the mother wait 18 months to complain? Could it be that she hadn't seen her child for this period of time and that the grandparents were the custodians?
This is a petition organised by this child's mother. She indicates that the child's father gave his consent to the circumcision - if that is the case, is that sufficient consent for the procedure to be legal?

if its for health reasons i agree, what do ladies think..do they prefer the look of uncircumcised or circumcised, or do some not care, or prefer not to answer ?
