There really is no point descending into "whataboutery", it's shallow and just makes false equivalencies. A young woman has now been killed, ostensibly over a statue. This question should have been put to bed when the council voted. It's their jurisdiction and their responsibility. A bluddy statue is not worth killing over. Also I just don't buy the idea...

// Mikey, I repeat, get a grip.// someone

yeah Mikey - get a grip and start agreeing with all the crazies who think that Trump is the Second Coming
and for a start - agree with White Supremacy

I mean half the people on this thread wish they were in the boot of the car - it seems like

oh and by the way -
the answer to what do Jefferson and Washington have in common is that they were both slave owners...

I mean half the people on this thread wish they were in the boot of the car - it seems like

?
...the governor of Virginia not New Jersey

Yes good remarks from Trump, at last, but it is appalling that it has taken so long for this to come out.
Beeb 1900 seems to think Trump doesnt want to alienate some of the people who voted for him

wasnt that Mikey's point ( or am I canonising / sanctifying M ?)
where mikey leads - the Beeb follows 24 h later

Can I have best answer of the day please ?

Yes, Mikey the oracle. Shame he failed to think it through rationally, although I’m sure it occurred to the sneaky Beeb. Thing is, if Trump is so concerned about alienating voters, by supporting the far right protestors, as Mikey claims Trump does, Trump would alienate a far greater number of voters – the black contingent – but don’t burst their bubble. They’re on a Trump-bashing roll as usual.

Seems there’s more than one who needs to get a grip.
I am not sure the suggestion is that Trump actually supports these people: just that he is reluctant to condemn them for fear of alienating some of his own supporters.
Another explanation might be simply that he doesn't really "get" the sense of outrage generated when a bunch of hate-spewing protesters (more than a bunch in fact) descend on unfamiliar territory and start abusing the some of the locals. I mean, remember the (justifiable) outrage when the anti-poppy Muslims descended, disgracefully, on Royal Wootton Bassett to make their protests. Imagine if a riot there had ensued after they had started abusing the locals and the Prime Minister had come on TV and merely effective said that they all need their heads knocking together.

aaahhh - Nigh in typical generous mood.....

being right is not the main thing - it is the only thing.....
I think Kromo that despite getting BA your view is on shaky ground

First the dead has nothing to do with the thread. That occurred, or at least was reported on, after the thread started, and the article edited to include it. It has no bearing on the discussion.

Then, destroying statues is what the bad guys do. IMO it is naive to believe it's not an attempt to erase history. It's precisely what it's for. Take the public reminder out, hope it all dies a death.

And then it's perfectly reasonable to dissent over decisions made by those who are supposed to represent the will of the people but who instead do what they wish and tell the people thst they are supposed to represent what they must tolerate.

At all levels this was an act designed to case a problem, and the protest duly occurred as must have been the intent. It's unfortunate that the protests have been by the most obnoxious of groups but presumably that was anticipated and played for.

"Trump condemns 'evil racism' in Charlottesville"

I claim nothing for this last minute change of heart by Trump. Its the speech he should have made days ago.

But now that he made it, at last....good for him.

A few days ago he condemn violence on all sides, something many ABers think is unacceptable.

,
Good of Trump to make a second speech just because some on AB thought the first one unacceptable.
PeterPedant, //aaahhh - Nigh in typical generous mood..... //

No - Nigh in a typical rational mood.
I thought I had my view sorted out - I also do not agree with the 'adjustment' of history because it is uncomfortable.

But the notion that one council are removing one statue does not in itself indicate the erasure of history, so I'm unsure what I think now, which is actually really unusual for me!
