Exactly...that is why i think that the judge got it wrong.
There is no 'think the judge got it wrong' Sqad he did.
I don't think the man thought it was a baby but if he did (as the judge thinks) then as I sai ... as divebuddy said earlier then he should be in jail.

With respect, some on here today seem to have missed the essential issue here.
I couldn't give a monkeys toss, why this horrible man punched the baby in the face, nor do I think its important in any way if he thought it was a doll, a child, or a bloody cabbage.
If he really thought it was a doll, then he should put away somewhere, where he can't harm anyone. If he knew it was really a baby, then he should be put away anyway. This was serious assault on a defenceless baby, and a fine of a few hundred pounds just isn't good enough.
I think we should try to understand a little less, and condemn a little more.

He claimed he then tapped the child with a "loose fist" to "wind up" the girl."
Just where were these women when a strange man was able to approach a 7 year old girl, spark up a conversation with her before punching the poor little baby?
They can't have been cooing over the baby so must have had their backs turned nattering. This could have been alot worse as he could have walked off with the 7 year old or the baby or worse still stabbed the girl and the baby.
"He was fined £900 and ordered to pay £500 costs and £100 compensation."
^The judge who handed that sick weirdo creep should have jailed that beast for 20 years and given himself 20 years for giving him that joke of a sentence.

I haven't suggested that punching dolls is a imprisonable offence, or if I have, then maybe my grammar is at fault.
The chap gave the excuse that he thought it was a doll. The Judge didn't
believe him, but still didn't jail him for the offence. In my opinion, he should have done.

I find this such a bizarre story I don't know what to believe and what side to sit on. I would say however there's a very big difference between "tapped the child with a loose fist" and punching. If it were actual punching then a fine seems a very odd sentence. Come to think of it even if it were the former a fine seems inappropriate.
