"We understand that debates get heated, but personal attacks and abusive language will not be tolerated"

Can we all calm down a bit please?

I've been written to several times about how abrasive and aggressive this section has become.

Several have pointed out that the language in particular has become childish and brutish, with name calling and hyperbole being especially annoying.

So let's calm down a bit. Let's stop calling people "traitors to britain" and "friends of jihad" or similarly rude things.

If you can't make your opinion felt without resorting to these personal attacks, then you'll likely be met with suspension, or banning.

All the best,

Ed

This Referendum issue is sort of like a math/maths class: It has created quite a division amongst you, and the gap is multiplying daily with the addition of acrimonious remarks which is really subtracting from the quality of the site.

jno... and so it continues. Under the guise of criticism, but personally I don't consider the question 'how many is a drove?' to be criticism - simply the activation of a wooden spoon. Not to worry. You carry on if you want to.
I've never quite understood what "" passive aggressive "" actually was, until now :-) :-)
♫ There's just no point in causing unnecessary trouble ♫

anneasquith, I'm not sure to whom you're applying that, but it sounds very much like a personal attack to me - very much a 'no, no'.
naomi you should know by now that aa only 'attacks' the Royal family and then moans about 'personal attacks' on AB all the tme !
// It really irritates me when the mods and those who follow them persistently deny that posters have left because of moderation. //

// but intelligent posters have abandoned this site in droves in recent years //

Who were they. Can you name them?

The churn-rate in any collective group dictates that some will leave, and others will join. That is a natural process. If someone leaves because their pists are being constantly moderated, it means they consistantly did not follow the Site Rules.
"bednobs
Those terms were not directed at any individual because the 'individual hides behind anonymity and thus avoids giving reasons for their bizarre and selective censorship. How would you describe that selective removal"

but it is a personal attack - a person did the thing that you are upset about and you are using abusive language towardsthat person (who may well be reading this thread - exactly what the Ed is asking everyone to stop doing in t his thread. So you use this thread to abuse the person who did the thing you didn't like i can't describe what you are talking about - i didn't see it.
Sorry . I never moan about personal attacks jam, because they affect me not a jot.
It's quite amazing how many "victims" are here and not one confession to actually doing it... Maybe a little more self-awareness might help.
I see JAMBUTTY has been a member for less than two months, wonder if that is a new member or just a new name?
New name - happy now ?????
"Because they see some individuals putting other users off from using the site because of their 'tone'. Is it too much to ask everyone to behave civilly toward other users? "

but as I pointed out the OP was intentionally or not biased towards certain people on here.

from the OP " Let's stop calling people "traitors to britain" and "friends of jihad" or similarly rude things."

AB editor got ruffled...fine...then AB editor should have used general terms rather than the specific ones that were used....

I dont even need the fingers on one hand to name those that usually start the insults and derailing etc of posts...but if they intend to dish it out then they cant go crying when it comes back, its that simple.
As in "the real world" if anybody starts on me I'll deal with them..its a two way street...
Gromit, //If someone leaves because their pists are being constantly moderated, it means they consistantly did not follow the Site Rules.//

Not necessarily. See my earlier posts relating to 'rules' that are liberally applied but that don't actually exist among 'Site Rules'.

No, I will not name them. I'm not in the business of making the personal choices of individuals public.
Can we have a button to keep our profiles hidden?

Good post, pixie
When *I* do it it's plain-speaking/telling it how it is/not-suffering-fools, etc. etc......

When *you* do it it's being rude/being argumentative/being abusive, etc. etc.....

It's a matter of perception and self-perception and if more people thought before they posted and made sure they adhered to the Site Rules, there wouldn't be much need for threads like this.
And by the way CORBY what is your point about 'two months' ??
For all the complaints, it must be good here because the complainers haven't left. :)
it's an irregular verb jack - to conjugate:-

i am witty and amusing.
you are petty and small-minded.

:-)
@jambutty
"And by the way CORBY what is your point about 'two months' ?? "

certain individuals like to check on people and then try and infer certain conclusions...ie: if youre new and dont go with certain views on here and agree with certain posters then probably your a reincarnation of someone whos been banned or whatever..
