"We understand that debates get heated, but personal attacks and abusive language will not be tolerated"

Can we all calm down a bit please?

I've been written to several times about how abrasive and aggressive this section has become.

Several have pointed out that the language in particular has become childish and brutish, with name calling and hyperbole being especially annoying.

So let's calm down a bit. Let's stop calling people "traitors to britain" and "friends of jihad" or similarly rude things.

If you can't make your opinion felt without resorting to these personal attacks, then you'll likely be met with suspension, or banning.

All the best,

Ed

This Referendum issue is sort of like a math/maths class: It has created quite a division amongst you, and the gap is multiplying daily with the addition of acrimonious remarks which is really subtracting from the quality of the site.

A trivial point, but this person seems to have been suspended on a number of occasions, not banned.
Baldric,
A suspension that is not recinded is a ban.
The current member has been suspended as well, but allowed back after a cooling off period.
Seems like a couple here are avid students of Michael Gove's assassination manual!! :-(
Perhaps a points system should be introduced, and then when so many points have been issued to an Aber, that Aber should then be suspended or banned, after first being allowed to appeal.
Why should anyone need to appeal?
The rules are plain for all to see and if you can't be bothered to abide by them then, quite frankly, you don't deserve to have the freedom to post on this forum.
Nice one, retro, except that at the same time that he was assassinating he was also committing political suicide. He is finished. Theresa won't give him a job.
I think the user concerned has taken on board the message as intended.
Retrocop,
I like the user we are discussing and do not wish to assasinate him. When he was last suspended I posted that he should be reinstated.

But accusing another member of being a traitor or terorist sympathiser is not acceptable debate, and contravenes this site's rules. The pister should heed the friendly warning.
TTT,
I think you are right :-)
Pister, LOL!

I am not involving myself any further in this post. I certainly do not like the tone of some baying for blood.
As it is 1st July I will heed the advice of the survivors and forbears and keep my head below the parapet.!!
I think also that we need some guidance, ED, on the use of Rhymming slang, I think it offers a colourful style to posts that many find amusing.
Agreed, as I suggested last night maybe a little corner of the site where it could be used between those who favour it.
guidance, well, you should aim for iambic pentameter.
And everyone uses Acronyms. Maybe we should have an approved list.
I agree with TTT. Rhyming slang is harmless and raises a laugh (Turkish) except in the most po-faced of posters.
It doesn't raise a laugh when it is used to hide insults or confuse people or derail a debate.

There is no need for it - the only reason it continues is to wide people up!
a Glossary my be useful but I fear a lot of my TLAs would not be in it!
Gromit....if that person has been suspended 14 times and allowed back in,
I am at a loss to understand why they were let in a 15th time.....surely that person has been given plenty of chances already ?
jackthehat

In a democratic and free country, everyone deserves a fair trial with an opportunity to voice one's explanation in their own defence.

For example, if a person is systematically abused by others and they are forced to retaliate in such a way that they get suspended etc, they should then be allowed to provide evidence against their abusers.
