The issue is in requiring a type of footwear in women that is not required in men. As a man, I would highly object to being required to wear heels that caused the following health problems: http://www.osteopathic.org/osteopathic-health/about-your-health/health-conditions-library/womens-health/Pages/high-heels.aspx That's not to say that...

Mikey, heels are smarter.
I wonder if on a temp's salary, she was well-heeled?
Question Author
"heels are smarter."

Why? And, follow-up question, does that mean that flats can never be smart?
Jim...exactly what my next question was going to be !

Over to you Naomi !
Flats never look as smart as heels. Back to you, Jim - and Mikey.
Prudie - //It may seem a shocker at first but on reflection not so, I certainly don't agree with the sexism part, it's like men being told to wear ties. //

No, it's not.

If a man was asked to wear a tie that gradually constricted as the day wore on until he was seriously uncomfortable, and heading into potential long term skeletal damage because of the constriction, then that would be comparable.
Flats look smart with trousers and long skirts.
Jim...don't about you, but I am giving up here, as its all about fashion after all !

Thank God us men are not so vain !
Question Author
Seems that that's a subjective opinion rather than necessary truth.

But regardless, it has to be overridden by the known health risks. Walking in heels is just bad for you. There's nothing wrong in choosing to do things that are bad for you, if it's free choice. Being obliged to -- there's the problem.

I can't see why it's such a bad thing to allow at least some room for choice when it comes to footwear in particular.

Naomi, Portico sent her home.
PwC say: We first became aware of this matter on 10 May, some five months after the issue arose," the spokesman said
Men aren't vain....Christ, where are you living, Mikey.....just ask any fashionista, tailor or look at the men's mags on the newsagent's shelves....
Jim, people who work in City offices and hold that subjective opinion would disagree with you - well, except the woman in question who doesn't appear to be terribly au fait with City offices. Still, if it makes you feel better, you can always sign her petition. ;o)
If folk look smart enough to benefit the company, and let the employee fulfil a reasonable job description, I don't think rules should be able to insist on anything further. But that said wouldn't all us guys miss the rolling rears if they became history ;-)

"Still, if it makes you feel better, you can always sign her petition."

Way ahead of you on that one...

As it happens, I probably would agree that wearing heels makes you look a little smarter. But I think it's vastly outweighed by the question of comfort, particularly for long-term use.
Shoota, //Naomi, Portico sent her home.//

She was sent home after arriving at the client's office. Perhaps on being told she was required to wear heels, she called her employer to complain and was told to leave. I don't know, but whatever happened she didn't want to abide by the stipulated dress code.
As I said Jim, we manage ... somehow. :o)
DTC...come on !

We aren't vain in the same way as women are.

Otherwise, we would be clamouring to wear tight, uncomfortable footwear and clothes that reveal far too much of our bodies, especially in the middle of winter, and have wardrobes whose rails are groaning under the extreme strain of having to support clothes that we bought for one occasion and have never worn since. We would also probably only have 2, maybe 3 pairs of shoes, all of them bought for the surprising reason that they were comfortable enough to walk in.

I went to a family wedding last November, and as predicted all the memsahibs were complaining by mid-afternoon, that their feet were killing them, whilst us chaps were sitting down comfortably, only loosening out ties when called for.
Mikey, //clothes that reveal far too much of our bodies, especially in the middle of winter//

I don't know any woman who does that - well not personally anyway. Who on earth are you mixing with?
2 or 3 pairs? I have at least seven here in the UK and over 20 in the USA and as to ties, nearly a 100 Hermès animal ties, a collection built up over the years and a 'brand' in the office. I am not unusual.....now cough up guys, how many pairs of shoes and how much you will pay for them.
Welsh valley girls, naomi, Welsh valley girls....need we say more?
