She's 15 years younger than me, can't believe it. I don't usually comment on appearance, but for goodness sake, Mary - Get your hair cut! It doesn't matter about the colour.

As a mere man, I am somewhat reluctant to wander into this lionesses den, but you would think that if she knew she was going to be on national TV, she would have got her split ends done.

Nooooo, live and let live Hellywelly! She shouln't be made to conform. What is this rule about having to cut your hair on your 60th birthday anyway.?

For heavens sake. She's put up with a whole load of abuse on social media about her appearance and she's not changing for anyone.

Good for her! She is being true to herself and is comfy with that.
If she's happy in her own skin (and hair) fair play to her.
I'm 53 and my hair is still long. I don't like it short.
hellywelly what business is it of yours how someone else wears their hair?
I am not sure I know this person called Mary who was on Newsnight just now.
How long was her beard that gives you such concern?
Maybe the classicists pass you by ? ;-)
Apparently, she's on Radio4 on Friday morning, presenting a documentary on why people colour their hair. Or not...;-)

She's a brilliant classicist and historian who just happens to have long grey hair.
Up to her how she wants to wear her hair and nothing to do with other people. Some ought to look in the mirror themselves before they judge others.I'm looking forward to her programme on Pompeii next week.

She's a good and knowledgeable presenter, her hair is not important imo.
Shaney...if I'm not mistaken, the BBC documentary on is on tomorrow night.
Well thank you. Now I can see who she is I will say jolly good for her.I believe beautiful women of the older generation will always remain beautiful without making themselves look like mutton dressed as lamb.Lauren Bacall was always a stunner in my opinion. My M.I.L. ??? No comment.Thought she was a disco queen in her 80s. :-(
Oooh yes ,so it is 9pm .Just checked in the Radio Times ...thanks Pasta. I thought it was next week.
she is remarkable in that she was slogged off on twitter presumably for being an ugly witch something awful

and turned around to her detractors and asked: can I help you get a job ?

truly remarkable and so what if she isnt a looker of any sort ?
This thread has made me think about my hair quite a bit overnight. I have reasonable long hair, but not as long as Mary's, and many years ago a friend who was older than me suggested it was too long. When I resisted she asked me to promise her that I'd get it cut before I get too old to wear it long. I would have been in my 20's! and have always thought it was to do with the fashions of the day.

Maybe not. Look at Judy Dench and Julie Waters sporting short glamorous grey hair styles. What is a girl to do?

So it's fair game to mock a Cambridge classics don for her appearance, but taboo to do the same to anyone in a hijab.
No offence Helly bu t I have to say (having googled to see what she looks like) I think it looks fine on her. It's always a pity when woman decide they have got old and will now have short hair to minimise the attention it needs. A few can 'carry off' a short style, but if you have a good head of hair the chances are there is no better style than to flaunt it. I just wish I had a good head of hair. I keep what I have long but I know it doesn't look particularly good that way due to the MPB taking a chunk out of the middle: but it's my preference. Maybe I'll give in and change it when I'm 95 or something.

Do you ever think, after writing something, that it wasn't perhaps the wisest thing to have done?
Don't let them grind you down, helly. You're still allowed to have an opinion,,,and express it. (just about)
