So another over-paid and over-there (Barbados apparently ) falls on his sword.

This one was a former aid to Cameron. Good riddance as far as I am concerned.

My B.I.L. and family are moving out the Premier Inn (since Boxing Day) to rented accomodation in Prestwich for next 6 months whilst house in Bury is gutted and re floored, plastered etc. Not sure he is too concerned about scoring trite political points about the flood. He should of been returning from South Africa today to start back to work tomorrow. His...

So top bosses are not allowed to have a holiday then?
Bit strong, mikey - however, it was a misjudgement not to come back a few days earlier......
I actually felt sorry for him.

DTC...on that we will have to disagree !

::::

He had come under pressure for holidaying in Barbados during the floods in December, the wettest month on record in the UK.

He said the role now required him to be available at short notice and this was "inappropriate in a part-time non-executive position".

In a statement, he also said he found the media scrutiny "unacceptable".

He insisted he was "well qualified" to carry out the role but media focus on him was "diverting attention" from efforts to help those affected by flooding.

I'm sure that we can find a replacement that needs a job a bit more than Dilley.

Never mind....he got his Knighthood anyway.
Why? He is entitled to a holiday just as much as anyone else - its not like he was not in contact or that people could not make a decision in his absence!
I believe they tried to 'hide' the fact he was in Barbados. The PR guy/woman 'resigned' last week.
Part time, 3 day week, £100,000, we should demand a refund, but we will not as he is a friend of Dave.
He was hung out to dry
So to speak
Must of used the same crystal ball re weather you used last election Mikey!! :-)

If I were his wife I'd have been flaming furious if he'd cut short our Barbados Christmas for the floods, nothing of which could he help more were he in UK.

It was bound to end in this though, I actually feel a bit sorry for him.

I doubt there's any time he could safely have taken a holiday; short-notice weather events are pretty common these days. Did he not have a deputy to cover for him? Possibly not, if he was only working three days himself.

However, £100,000 for three days a week should have allowed him to save a bit for a rainy day. As to what exactly he *did* do, who knows? Perhaps the government should give some thought to what precisely the job might entail, and how to ensure it's done when the boss is away, before advertising it again.
As I said. I don't think being on holiday was the problem. Pretending he wasn't, and getting caught, was.
(being good for nothing probably didn't help)
He did have good intentions http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/new-environment-agency-head-sir-philip-dilley-won-t-mind-getting-his-feet-wet-9936986.html

''The Environment Agency’s new chairman has promised to get his wellies on quickly and visit the scene of any serious flood the UK suffers under his watch, saying he has learned from the misfortune of his predecessor.''

Well deserved BA Retro, although jno came a good second place !

To repeat....good riddance to this (expensive) louse.
"To repeat....good riddance to this (expensive) louse"

to repeat...the politics of envy....bitter anybody ?
excellent link, Talbot. He knew showing his face at floods was useless but he also knew he had to do it as part of the job. But there it is: if people take on pointless (but well-paid) jobs they should do them. The pay would, after all, have easily covered a flight back from Barbados (if indeed his expense account didn't). Yes, it would disrupt his holiday, but that's the job.
