/// BBC political correspondent Chris Mason says the atrocity has provoked deep soul-searching within government and among the police, raising the question of how the UK would cope if something similar were to happen here. ///

If recent police shootings are anything to go by, there would be numerous suspensions prior to lengthy and expensive inquiries.

But we have to be very careful, when we have Labour warning, of the possible damage to community relations.

Best to make firearms illegal for the cops, we don't want to upset the 'community' now do we?

There were only about 15 replies when I last looked at this. I’d composed a reply but called away. I don’t think the debate has moved on much since then so here it is. “…do you think the police should be questioned as to their reasons for discharging a firearm or no?” Yes. A quick debrief back at the nick. A report from each of those involved. A quick...

Talking of assuming "far too much credit for one's self":

/// you haven't upset me - that takes a very smart cookie indeed. ///

Not with you.

Those who think the police should NOT be armed should ask themselves how the would feel if they were sitting with friends in a restaurant and two crazed gunmen entered with automatic weapons and their only protection was a policeman with a truncheon.

Then please allow me to try and explain.

/// that takes a very smart cookie indeed ///

Why a very smart cookie, if you yourself are not assuming far too much credit for one's self?

Meaning that one has to be extra smart to get past you, that is your assumption, when we all know that it is very easy, no particular skills needed.
aog, 'getting past' me? What a strange way to think!

Silliness doesn't upset me, it's as simple as that.

I can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant and saw a copper whilst I was eating so that kinda shoots your theory down doesn't it!
Though it must be said that the Paris police were armed, and it cannot be guaranteed that an individual cop with only a pistol will face up to a maniac sporting a Kalashnikov.
Islay; not all policemen are in uniform, you might have had 'Dirty Harry' sitting at the next table.

Ah, thanks for that Naomi, at least you are not accusing me of being silly, so I have certainly upset you for some other reason, care to tell me what it is?
Khandro, it is not possible to have a copper in every restaurant - you are scraping the bottom of the barrel!!

"Nurse......someone's nose seems to have been put out of joint over here...."

Seeing armed Police-officers on British streets is something I believe that few of us wish to see; and any moves towards that eventually need to be deeply seriously considered, and a review in their usage would seem to be perfectly in order.

Lol
You dine at the wrong eateries. Just go where any member of the Royal Family dines on their day off. You will get your very own personal protection officer .
The others will be round the corner out of view as in your experience. :-)
It has been a proud tradition not to have armed police officers for many years but if it is a choice between a rabid fanatical Jihadist with a Kalashnikov and more armed police I know who I would feel more comfortable with.
I believe there are two ARVs only for the whole of London. Nearly 20 years ago there were about 6 .I don't recall the threat alert level ever been raised as high as it is now either.

Retrocop have you seen todays MoS, Armed Officers threatening to hand in their weapons as a protest because of the one arrested?

That is your opinion or is it based on actual fact, can you produce evidence of any poll being carried out on that issue?

Or is it the same as those who say that there are few who wish to see the introduction of ID cards or even the reintroduction of National Service?
The clue is in my typing "....I believe....."

We need to make sure that any and all decisions regarding the routine arming of the British 'Bobby' are well-considered and thought out.

I haven't read it yet but I mentioned the fact that it happened quite recently on another thread. It was the thread about the officer being arrested.
It was bound to happen. They may not strike but they are not obliged to carry firearms and can hand in their pink cards any time they like.
Just what Mr Hogan-Howe needs when his Metropolis is under the highest security alert.
