Who says the SNP are anti English :-)
Someone had to stand up for the majority of the English against this rather shabby attempt effectively to reintroduce fox hunting in England
Cameron gambled that they would not vote against something which is legal in Scotland, but I could not see the logic behind that assumption

Danny...its not quite a clear cut as that. See this quote from the BBC link : "Mr Robertson (Leader of the SNP group in Westminster) said: "We totally oppose fox hunting, and when there are moves in the Scottish Parliament to review whether the existing Scottish ban is strong enough, it is in the Scottish interest to maintain the existing ban in England and...

What do you think it is, Pontins?
Baldric
I think he's mistaking the Blues and Royals.

And the vote is now off.

How can an ex Police Officer be a Navy Squadie?

To be clear, the proposal was to relax the law on the use of dogs so that it is the same in England and Wales as in Scotland. The actions of the SNP have stopped this. I don't blame the SNP for the Tories losing the bill, I'm quite happy they've lost and I give credit to the Tory rebels for that, since the Tories have an absolute majority. I do however find the SNP hypocritical on this matter, and I look forward to their imminent total ban not only of foxhunting but also of deer hunting, grouse shooting and fly fishing ... yeah, right.

To be clear this was effectively a revocation of the hunting ban, because it is quite inconceivable that a fox flushed out by a pack of hounds would be shot rather than torn to pieces.
The idea that this was a move by the government to bring the law into one with Scotland is just laughable. There are lots of different laws in Scotland and I don't see much of a move to change those.
The idea presumably is that the appropriately named EVEL will clear the way to another vote which the SNP would not able to vote on but I suspect that there is a good chance that that won't get through either
One Nation?

You're saying that Scotland doesn't "effectively" have a hunting ban after all, despite what steg and maggiebee claim ...

> I suspect that there is a good chance that [EVEL] won't get through either

It has a much better chance of getting through now!
Bonkers
More than you probably. I worked with the Blues on a few occasions and have been a guest in the RSM's mess at Combermere Barracks Windsor and also at Hyde Park barracks.
Windsor houses the armoured recce division, used to be Scimitars with Rayden Chain gun. I knew the Hon Lt Parker (Heir to the Parker pen co) who was blown out the turret of his scimitar "like a champagne cork" when his ARV encountered an Argentinian mine.
Hyde park Barracks houses the ceremonial troop and shares it with the Sovereigns escort. Wan't to know why the farrier sergeants both carry axes at the rear of the column?
Anything else I can help you with in regard to the Blues and Royals. Used to be The Horse Guards. The RSM's mess do a nice wine with their regimental badge on the label.

Scotland has a hunting ban like England and Wales but not a very effective one

"Traditional fox hunting with dogs is illegal across Britain. However, hunts in England and Wales are able to flush out foxes for pest control purposes, using only two dogs - as long as the foxes are shot as quickly as possible. In Scotland an unlimited number of dogs can be used for this purpose. Conservative MPs have been given a free vote on a proposal to relax the law on the use of dogs so that it is the same in England and Wales as in Scotland ..."

Exactly: it is very difficult to shoot a fox that's been "flushed out" by a pack of hounds. And why would you want to use more than two dogs anyway.
Come to think of it why would you want to go to the trouble of pursuing a single fox for miles across country, often trespassing through private property, in the name of pest control?
I used to waste hours chasing terrified mice round our house with a cat and several sharp knives until someone suggested a mousetrap :-)
Not sure why the PM is wasing time on this irrelevance but who cares what Jimmy K and the SW2 think? he has a clear majority, he can push it through.
As I said, I'm quite happy it isn't going to happen and I credit the rebel Tory MPs with that outcome.

The point is, ichkeria, the rules in Scotland ARE more relaxed, the vote WAS to provide parity on this, and the SNP indicated it WOULD vote on this non-Scottish matter despite (as Svejk's link demonstrates) saying until very recently that they WOULD NOT vote on this as "The Hunting Act is one such matter that purely affects England and Wales, and so SNP MPs would not vote on this issue."

The SNP have had a long time to get their own house in order not only on foxhunting, but deer hunting, grouse shooting, fly fishing and many other traditional Scottish activities which somehow they have overlooked since gaining power. They have been the largest party in the Scottish parliament since 2007 and have had an absolute majority since 2011.

It was hypocritical of the SNP to behave like this and it's an indication of how they might behave on other matters - which makes it more likely, though still unlikely, that the EVEL changes will get through.
"Perhaps they should also consider a ban on Grouse shooting?

As your first link won't open for me, I'll have to ask.. Why?

He can't that's the thing. About 40 Tories are against it, including at least one minister. And a lot of Tories are none too happy about EVEL either.
With a free vote, the legislation would be doomed, almost certainly.

As for "bringing legislation in line with Scotland" I look forward to Mr Cameron's plan to do it with prescription charges, for example
