I can not understand how a child born with disability due to his mothers drinking can be compensated as a 'victim of crime' ! It is not a crime for a pregnant Mum to drink it is unadvisable but not illegal. It is not illegal to serve drink to a pregnant woman either so where does the 'crime' come into it? Was she 'force fed' the alcohol?

If somebody is stupid enough to have unprotected sex and get preggers then they also haven't the sense to stop drinking/smoking etc.
As you say Svejk... here we go again. Open those floodgates...
They should make it clearer for the hard of thinking.

Zero alcohol to be consumed during pregnancy....
No, No-one controls your Right / Left hand to lift a glad on alcohol but yourself, If they are warned before hand, let that be the end of it.
It's one of the first questions the midwife asks.

I don't agree with Jan though. Intelligent people have unprotected sex.

We, society, pick up the tab as it is. If this case is won, where will it end?
Talk about floodgates Svejk, what about the paid overtime Issue that has just started?
Ummmm, that person I was on about yesterday, she worked in the L.Lighter

Sorry Svejk.

Yep, more nonsense, TW. Its no wonder all the jobs nowadays are zero hour/agency instead of proper jobs.

It's difficult because no ones knows how much alcohol consumed will effect the foetus. Everyone is different and handles alcohol differently.

A side affect of the case being won, eddie, will be to criminalise the mothers.
There are cases, and i've known a few, of women who haven't known they were pregnant until pretty late on when it became visually notable- what about those?
^^ so is this trying to make it illegal for pregnant women to drink? I just don't see it.
When I was pregnant with my daughter I didn't find out until I was 5 months. Luckily I didn't drink.
Scum Lawyers making a shed load of bucks out the tax payer - again.

It is a problem, but short of prohibition (which I bet many of these campaigners would love) I cannot see a resolution. As pointed out above too many anomalies to make a no-drink law on pregnant women work.
Not actually illegal, I don't think, Eddie, but anyone who's not a perfect mother could be sued.

Strong and stable families are the foundations of society - Conservative Party ... as are rich lawyers.

'I've had a *** life, our dad left when I was little, where's my compo'.
I once hit myself over the head with a hammer and needed hospital treatment.

I think all hammers should be labelled 'warning: do not hit yourself over the head with this', and I'll be taking the appropriate legal action.
Svejk, what do you think should be done?

It's really difficult. Say an alcoholic gets pregnant, what do they do? Going cold turkey can cause serious harm, continuing to drink can harm the baby.

Should compensation be paid? I'm not sure but it's certainly not fair on any child that has FASD.

As I say, ummmm, where does it end?
