Why after 51 years of screening 'Doctor Who' was there any need to include a Lesbian scene in the first place?

/// The decision to remove the first lesbian encounter in the show’s 51-year history has angered gay rights campaigners, who accused executives of giving into homophobia. ///

It' all a bit of a non event ( at least until the BBC decided to remove the scene) and tbh if it was a 'lesbian kiss' it was the least erotic thing I've ever seen. It was an air exchange between two lesbian characters, not quite the same thing, nothing erotic or sexual about it at all. Should it have been removed because someone's sensibiities got upset? No because...

/// The episode was banned in the UK for 25 years. ///

/// Furthermore, in the US, loads of Southern states refused to show it. ///

/// This is quite well known. ///

I didn't know, so I would appreciate it if you will now produce the evidence for my attention.
Seriously...it's a well known fact.

Oh, you provided the same link... but if you read down...

"Assumptions that "Plato's Stepchildren" was excluded because the Kirk/Uhura kiss would have been 'controversial' are erroneous."

/// So are you more outraged at a lesbian kiss or a inter species kiss I wish you would make it clear in you initial op!! ///

Don't be so dramatic who said I was 'OUTRAGED'?

/// I don't think it has to do with offending 'Asians' at all I think that excuse is being used as a scapegoat!!! Remember when torch wood showed a gay kiss, OMG there was an outcry by white middle classed older men!! ///

Read the report,

*** The BBC cut a controversial lesbian kiss scene from Doctor Who to avoid offending audiences when it was screened in Asia. ***

Was this scene cut when it was screened in Asia, so that it didn't offend middle-class elderly Asian men?

You asked why after 51 years was there any need to include a lesbian kiss in the first place.

There is no need, but then, there is no need not to.

However, perhaps the audience the BBC is reaching out to here isn't bothered by the screne...seeing as 6.1 million people watched the episode and six people complained.

Let me just reiterate...the BBC received six complaints.

Out of 6.1 million viewers.

Six.

Thank you for those links, I have also done some research into “Plato’s Stepchildren" and I think it has more to do with the BBC's over-sensitivity to the 'Forced Kiss' than the colour of the two participants.
That's another trick the good old Daily Mail employs regularly.
ie. they post "news" stories where the first couple of paragraphs start the sensational anger-provoking thought process they so love, THEN if anyone can be bothered read to the bottom, it's a different story.
ANOTHEOLDGIT, how long have you been watching Dr Who?
"This is quite well known"

"I didn't know, so I would appreciate it if you will now produce the evidence for my attention".

Here's some evidence for your attention: I knew about it.

I don't think I've met anyone who didn't, but then again my friends, associates and I don't have our heads so firmly rammed up our bums as you do.

We are talking about the subject matter and not your interracial kiss diversion aren't we?

Because I can see no reference that the Lesbian kiss scene was cut because of six viewer's complaints.

/// BBC insiders say the scene, which lasted just a couple of seconds, was cut to avoid falling foul of a broadcasting code in Singapore which says programmes should avoid any content that could ‘justify’ homosexual and lesbian lifestyles. ///

/// The Mail on Sunday has learned that a special BBC compliance team headed by former documentary film-maker Jane Ray insisted the scene was removed. ///

/// ANOTHEOLDGIT, how long have you been watching Dr Who? ///

Not a recent watcher, but still a little longer than you I presume, back when the first Dr Who was William Hartnell. 1963 - 1966.
Aog, while you're here- I was a little disappointed at your comment on penultimate page of here http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question1360446-3.html

Would appreciate some clarification please?
"We are talking about the subject matter and not your interracial kiss diversion aren't we?"
This isn't a "diversion" it is pertinent and a very similar situation.
Honestly, I can't believe the depths you'll plum in order to wriggle out of your blunders.
I take it (as you've made no further reference) that you are now satisfied that the inter racial kiss scene in Star Trek did actually happen.
//What kissing a Lizard woman, something strange about that, I can't see any man desperate enough to do that.//

Dont knock it till you tried it!!! you snog with forked tongue!!!

Im up for a go, find me a lizard woman!!

You have found the answer to that one.

Even if you don't consider it to be a diversion, a diversion is what it is, trying to turn a sexuality issue into a racial issue.

/// I take it (as you've made no further reference) that you are now satisfied that the inter racial kiss scene in Star Trek did actually happen. ///

Since I previously posted two jpg links on this, I think I was quite aware that an interracial kiss did indeed take place.

/// Honestly, I can't believe the depths you'll plum in order to wriggle out of your blunders.///

I couldn't have put it better myself, that describes you perfectly.
