The more that came out, the more it was obvious she was totally the wrong person to carry out an independent inquiry. She is deeply entrenched in the establishment. Her replacement needs to be someone outside of it.

She would have had to examine whether her brother failed to properly investigate claims of child abuse.

It was never if, just when? imo
Think Ian DH Smith should Chair the inquiry .
really, can this government get nothing right,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,she was never the right person to chair this enquiry with her alleged family history, so to the numerous victims of abuse yet another '' balls up '' :(
^^^^^^
poor Ed balls - not even in government and he gets blame for this
bazile. I was going to say something else, but , best not !
That's an appropriate decision.
She has done the decent thing....good on her.
"Cooper Up", anne?
It's the right thing to do, but if you were her age why would you even have accepted the job in the first place?

SD has a point here. Given her age I think she was unwise to have accepted at all.
I suppose that experience that usually comes with age don't count for anything,as usual, these days.
She's 80, retrocop - the chances of her living long enough (or being in good enough health) to complete the enquiry would not have been very high - I'd lay odds on it taking most of the next parliament or even longer ...
You do not that 80 year olds do not just keel over, sunny dave? She could live for another 20 years or more.
And if she did she'd just pass it to someone else.
Actually I was more thinking "why would anyone want to take this poisoned chalice" - then thought "and at 80 it would be even less something you'd want to do"
Her brother is now being accused of being one of those deeply involved, so how could she remain?
