// I wish to say this to those who are constantly wishing for an end to religion, can you ever see an end to religion per-se? If England ceases to be a Christian country, which this report says could happen in 16 years time, would you be happy to see it become a Muslim country? // No. Because Islam is another religion. We should not be governed by clerics. We should...

Question Author
i have just read through some of this, it does make for interesting reading
i will reread shortly

ANOTHEOLDGIT, you said, ' Since it seems that most indigious residents of these islands are not Christian...' but the 2011 Census showed

Christians down 13 percentage points to 59%.
Respondents with no religion up 10 points to 25%.
Muslim up from 3% to 5%

if you think most Britons are not Christian, should you not be grateful for the Christian immigrants?
Question Author
no, if we are ever to move forward, away from all religion, why do you want more Christians, Muslims, can't we have people who are professional, well educated, have enough money to support themselves, bring something to Britain, other than outdated mores.
mikey; // I am just glad that I can make my own mind up about important issues like abortion, same-sex marriages,//
Rejecting God to uphold these seems to be a poor exchange to me.
Question Author
why should any religious organisation tell you what you can do in your life, your body, its the only one you get.
Khandro...there is no such person as God. I know he exists for you but he doesn't exist for me. That is why I am able to form my own opinions. We have both had the opportunity to choose whether we believe in a religion or not and I am sure you are as happy with your decision as I am with mine.

Despite many people trying to convert me, normally those bl**dy JWs or those young American Mormon boys, who look about 15 years old, I have never tried to persuade anyone to be an atheist, and I have no intention of starting with you !

Of which I expect you are more than glad !

As the late lamented Dave Allen used to say, may your God go with you.

emmie; // its the only one [life] you get.//
On what evidence do you base this assertion? :-)
Khandro.....far be it for me to speak on behalf of emmie (!) but I would imagine its because she is an atheist, making her own mind up about simple issues. That is what is wonderful about being an atheist...complete freedom to decide what is true or just superstition. Theists have nothing to lose but their chains !
Question Author
my o/h hasn't come back and told me what it's like elsewhere, nor my nan, or countless friends, colleagues, if there was more someone would let me know surely
Question Author
every sensible part of me says there is nothing after this, i would like to think that there is, but that i am sure is incorrect.
In the name of the wee man, we're stardust.
//my o/h hasn't come back and told me what it's like elsewhere//,
With respect for him; how could he? Eminent scientists tell us that there could be a three dimensional universe just a millimetre away from us. But if that millimetre was measured in a fourth spatial dimension we would be completely unaware of it and certainly unable to correspond with it.
Many things in our universe are far from certain, and are not even necessarily predicated on 'religion'.
Question Author
so you agree that science has much to teach us.
Jesus Cameron and his twelve Decsipels
Decsipels

? Is that Disciples or Despicables ?
emmie; //so you agree that science has much to teach us.// Yes, and when science disproves morality we should change the precepts of religion, but as yet I see no cause to, and we do so at our peril.
Oh dear, what a messy debate. Please correct me if I am wrong on any of the following:
(a) When people tick boxes on a census form or survey they may or may not be telling the truth - just trying to satisfy the powers-that-be and get rid of the paper nuisance maybe. If you were an atheist applying for a job and it was still legal to ask your religion I bet you would lie and say "christian" in the U.K., in case the interviewer was a devout religionist. I would because it's a trivial matter.
(b) Of course you can be ethnically jewish and atheist but you cannot be religiously jewish and an atheist - a contradiction in terms.
(c) Fanatical murderers asside, Islam is no threat to this or any other country - forget relative percentages, each man & woman will make up their own mind and most by far never consider religion as important, which it isn't. It's just about baptism and teaching lies.
(d) Religion worldwide is dieing thanks to our creation of new gods: TV celebs, a lust for cinema/TV violence and related inventions like the internet and mobile phones. Please note that TV's "Songs of Praise" shows full churches thanks to the TV cameras without which those churches would be virtually empty. We made our own gods over millenia. We destroyed them and replaced them at a "whim". Todays gods were made by us and we are now replacing them.
(e) Religion is horrifying to most mortals with its promise of eternal life (everlasting boredom or reincarnation as an earwig or spider).
So, emmie, David Cameron's voter "appeal" is a non-starter - a defo "NO" to your question which refers to an Eton/Oxford millionaire who does not understand unthinking yobs like us (pardon me emmie if the latter phrase is insulting and you are as out of touch as "Dave" is).
Kindest Regards,
SIQ.
Luckily, atheism is growing faster than any religion. Hope yet.
