@ Octavius - If you are going to berate people for expressing a view on a chatsite, you are going to be berating everyone for evermore. There can be no argument from anyone, atheist or zealous fundamentali st, that this specific practice, raised by Mikey in this thread, derives its authenticity from religious belief - a belief that basically everything is the...

//On a UK chat site consisting of 99% atheists? Puuurllease.//
This is only one place where I promote the demise of religion. I have debated bigger nutters on other sites than the likes of Goodlife and friends.
AB is great place to learn from others.
What are you doing here? It looks a lot to me like your are a religious apologist campaigning for the right of the religious to spout their faith unquestioned.

Octavius. Not sure what I have done to incur a rant from you. I thought I had my case reasonably cogently.
FGM is just an extreme example of the uneducated and unacceptable behaviour that some religions are guilty of. I made it quite clear that I abhor the practice of circumcision of baby boys as well. Religion isn't just about harmless activities, like old ladies arranging the flowers in nice little Anglican Churches all over the UK. Religion is guilty of the oppression of free will of people all over the world on a massive scale.
As regards to Africa, perhaps we ought to look a little closer to home first. We have incidents of British girls being sent over seas to be mutilated and then brought back to their communities at home. We should start investigating that with immediate effect...its child abuse for goodness sake.
I will stand no lectures from anybody on the backwardness of religious drivel and I will take every opportunity to "berate" religious practices at every opportunity I get, here on AB and in real life.

There can be no argument from anyone, atheist or zealous fundamentalist, that this specific practice, raised by Mikey in this thread, derives its authenticity from religious belief - a belief that basically everything is the womans fault, down to her uncontrollable desires. Patriarchal mysogyny embedded into the DNA of all of the abrahamic religions.
People who comment here may be tirelessly engaged in works over here or in Africa or anywhere else - or they may be doing nothing directly - they may be too occupied with their own family, their won work to do anything - but that does not deny them the right to comment on the situation and criticise the religions that impart this nonsense to its followers.
As for the site being 99% atheists - i think thats a slight exaggeration.Of those who regularly contribute to, say, R&S on the subject I grant you the majority are probably atheist, but there are several regulars who make counter-arguments. And of course we can have no way of knowing the beliefs of the lurkers and readers and sporadic contributors.
Your posts actually sound vaguely defensive -I think because you see such criticisms offered here as being, indirectly, and attack on your own religious beliefs.
I will agree with you on one point though- the more involved people get in such issues, the more they contribute, the sooner such practices can be consigned to history. Becoming an activist for something is of course very often sparked by reading chat and debate forums and contributing to them.....

I am not denying that right, in fact I encourage it. FGM under any guise is abhorrent. After the armchair soap boxing ... what then...? That is my point. Go and do something about it.

Actually Octavius, my original post and all others makes a point of not mentioning Africa, or any other backward part of the world. But I have mentioned Britain, where we also have a problem. Its up to the relevant authorities, like the Police, Social Services, Schools, etc to get off the religious fence and start doing something about this. As a bachelor it would be highly inappropriate for me to start looking at girls private parts in order to deduce whether a crime has been committed. The aforesaid authorities have a duty and the wherewithal to investigate. This situation has been ignored primarily because there is a fear of interfering in our diverse communities sensibilities. But this nervousness about going into the religious and racial lions den is misplaced and does these children no favours whatsoever.
I should point out that I am great supporter of a racially diverse Britain and fully realise that an investigation would be difficult. No one is suggesting, least of all me, that its going to be easy. But it still needs to be sorted out. Hopefully I have done my best in bring up this delicate and sensitive issue here on AB.
I am genuinely interested in your work in Pakistan and Uganda, and would appreciate knowing more. Is there a way, for instance, that others could help ?

Not all girls are sent overseas. It is happening HERE!
Octavius, simply because other people don’t make a point of publicising their own efforts, don’t assume they’re merely armchair critics.

mikey, as a man I appreciate the difficult nature of the subject matter. This is not one of the organisations I am involved with but I would suggest it is a start.
