Can you Imagine a better Number One

01:00 Sat 06th Jan 2001 |

The people have spoken (well, if you count Channel Four viewers and Observer readers), and Imagine by John Lennon has been voted the greatest No 1 single of all time.

The single, which didn't even become a UK number one until after Lennon's assassination in 1980, topped Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Hey Jude by The Beatles, Dancing Queen by Abba and Every Breath You Take by Sting. Only two votes separated the top two songs.

Imagine, taken from the 1971 album of the same name, was first released in the UK in 1975, and only made it to number 6.

But in the wake of Lennon's death, it stayed at number one for four weeks.

As well as its appearance at number one, it's also been in the charts twice since, in 1988 and 1999.

The video, shot at Lennon's mansion in Ascot, remains one of the most compelling images of the ex-Beatle.

But the Number One Number One Despite the affection of millions towards it, many critics have accused it of mawkish sentimentalism.

Rounding out the second half of the top 10 were:

Stand By Me by Ben E. King;

The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve;

Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis;

Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) by Spiller;

(Everything I Do) I Do It For You by Bryan Adams.

But what's your choice of the number one number one of all time It's one of the most emotional debates any music fans could have.
