Plan In Advance To Avoid Drink-Driving

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motorists have been urged to make an early decision with regards travel arrangements in order to avoid running the risk of drink-driving during the festive period.

A spokesman from the Institute of Advanced Motorists suggested that an increase in social gatherings over Christmas can make it more difficult for drivers to avoid having a drink.

Because of this, he said, it is important that people either plan an alternative way of travelling or make a resolution to stay away from alcohol in order to ensure safety behind the wheel and compliance with the law.

"It is crucial to decide firmly at the outset either not to drink or to leave the car where it is - even if that is the train station car park," he added.

He warned that those caught drink-driving face losing their licences; "sky-high" car insurance, a criminal record and a jail sentence of up to 14 years should their actions cause a serious accident.

This type of forward planning can be applied at any time of the year. Summertime is notorious for an increase in drink driving incidents as people enjoy drinking outdoors in the sun. If you are thinking about drinking make sure you leave the car at home.
