Best Money-Saving Green Cars Revealed

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motorists who are finding it difficult to cover the cost of car insurance, fuel, maintenance and road tax could make significant savings by opting for an eco-friendly car, it has been suggested.

Whatgreencar claimed with many drivers feeling the effect of the economic downturn there has never been a better time to opt for a small, fuel-efficient motor. According to a director at the consumer watchdog site, a number of British drivers have already done just that.

Commenting on the credit crunch's effect on the motor industry, he said: "The only winners have been the manufacturers of fuel-efficient cars in the mini and supermini segments."

The type of data the cars were judged on were CO2 ratings, purchase price, annual fuel cost savings compared to average UK diesel car, and 12 months road tax.

The top ten vehicles recommended by Whatgreencar were:

•    Nice's electric MyCar.
•    Smart Fourtwo.
•    VW Polo.
•    Toyota Aygo.
•    Fiat 500.
•    Skoda Fabia.
•    Fiat Panda.
•    Hyundai i10.
•    Daihatsu Sirion.
•    Vauxhall Agila.

In related news, the Department for Transport recently demonstrated its support for electric vehicles by announcing funding of £100 million to help the industry with marketing.
