Please help. I don't know much about cars. My Astra 53plate 1.6 won't start. The lights work and the windows do too. I bought a battery charger and charged the battery for at least 20 hours and still nothing. Is the battery useless or is there something wrong with the car? Me and 2 others bump started it and i drove it round the block a couple of times but when i turned it off and tried to start it again nothing. Also my car stereo just stopped working too

The battery needs to be replaced, it has totally died (or is not connected)
Oops sorry, just re read the post and see that the lights work.

Starter motor?

With you saying its the starter motor wouldn't there have been tell tale signs indicating it was on its way out? And if it is the starter motor is a big job to replace?
I am no expert, but I still suspect the battery.

Is it old?
53 plate, hoppy.

Usually a bad connection to the solenoid which is attached to the starter motor
