Solomon Kane

Solomon Kane is a dark fantasy adventure. Directed by Michael J. Bassett and is loosely based on the pulp magazine character Solomon Kane created in 1928 by Robert E. Howard. James Purefoy (Rome) stars in the title role. The film also stars Rachel Hurd-Wood, Mackenzie Crook and Pete Postlethwaite.

Solomon Kane is an excellent sci-fi action adventure film with outstanding special effects and a brilliant performance from James Purefoy. Without doubt Purefoy is indeed Solomon Kane, he dons the hat, cape and the tortured soul really well.

As a swashbuckling, fantasy, sword and sorcery film I think it works very well. There are some slow moments and it's possibly too grim and gray for the general populace but genre fans should be happy with it. If you like sci-fi action adventure movies or have read the comic books, Solomon Kane is highly recommended.

Solomon Kane is an Elizabethan adventurer disinherited by his father for disobeying his wishes who has an encounter with the Devil's reaper from which he just escapes with his life. He takes refuge in a monastery, gives up all his wealth and swears to a life of peace in an attempt to redeem his soul. However, he is forced to take up arms again to rescue a kidnapped girl to gain redemption.
