Four Weddings And A Funeral

09:03 Fri 30th Jul 2010 |

Four Weddings And A Funeral is one of the all time great romantic comedies. The film was directed by Mike Newell and was written by the hugely successful Richard Curtis, who also brought us Blackadder, Notting Hill and Love Actually. The all star ensemble cast includes Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, Simon Callow and John Hannah.

Four Weddings was a big hit at the box office at the time of its release but its popularity on DVD is still as strong as ever. The sensational success of the film is partly due to the inspired writing of Richard Curtis, who, apparently, got the idea from looking at old diaries and realising he had been to more than 70 weddings in ten years.

The on screen chemistry between Grant and MacDowell was superb and this set the standard for many years for romantic comedies. Audiences loved the idea that two people who kept ‘missing’ each other could finally end up together, the film appeals to the most basic of romantic souls. In addition, it is a truly funny film with plenty of wit and slapstick to please all viewers. However, there were some who found the language to be a little over the top and felt that it was unnecessary to the story.

The plot follows Charles (Grant) and his group of friends as they attend the four weddings of the title. Charles meets Carrie (MacDowell) at the first wedding and falls in love, unfortunately she is due to be married herself.
