Security Warning Over Untrimmed Gardens

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

For most of us the summer months mean endless mowing the lawn and weeding and never seeming to get time to just sit in the garden and enjoy it. However, for many people in the UK their garden is where they spend most of their time, forever trimming and pruning and planting to create the perfect green space.

With an increasing number of gardening programmes on the TV and more people jumping on the band wagon the temptation to nip down to the garden centre on a sunny Sunday afternoon is becoming something many of us cannot resist.

Unfortunately, this only lasts a few weeks when the weather is nice and then as soon as the rain returns we are back in the house complaining about how much the grass in growing. Then once we are distracted the garden gets neglected again and for many that is the end of it. However, it seems that we should be more worried about untidy gardens than we are as, it seems, that allowing your garden to run rampant could give burglars a helping hand, a landscaping expert has claimed.

A wave of recent enthusiasm has encouraged people to plant vines, bamboo and install easy-to climb trellises. Security can be particularly jeopardised when people may lack the time and expertise to keep things trimmed back.

"Landscaping isn't just something you plant and then forget about," said the gardening expert.

"In addition to enhancing the beauty and value of your property, your landscaping has a direct impact on your home's security."

He added that home insurance premiums will be affected by robberies and that the cost of crime can be paid twice over. He suggests trimming shrubs to the height of windowsills, and buying a basic guide to gardening and mastering the art of pruning.
