A word of warning though, Gundogman.

When you do the hot wash with soda crystals, it may release a lot of grey gunk that has built up. Most of it should wash away, but some little flecks may remain stuck to the drum or appear on the next wash.

I suggest your first wash after the hot one is of old towels - the ones you wipe the dog's paws with. If any flecks of grey...

Buy a bag of washing soda.

Tip a quarter of the bag the bag in and run it empty on the hottest wash possible (with no pre rinse)

That should improve it, but always leave the door open when it is empty for ventilation.

Repeat the hot wash with soda regularly.

If that doesn't kill the smell, run it empty with a bit of bleach in, but don't do coloureds in the next wash, just in case.
This suggests that the method by which you have it connected to the waste pipes to extract waste water is at fault. There should be a U-trap inline somewhere, to prevent foul smells from the sewer coming back up the waste pipe and entering the body of the machine.
Either you don't have a U-trap or (if this is just suddently a problem) the water is being syphoned out. Try cleaning out the waste pipe out with caustic soda or similar.
Washing soda, not caustic soda - Hopkirk is correct.
I think caustic would be OK in the waste pipe, but in my experience these smells are usually just from the inside of the machine.

Modern detergents work at lower temperatures and we add loads of fabric conditioner, so they get really skanky inside.
Two cups of white vinegar and a hot wash cycle with no load works for us. You can buy a gallon bottle of the stuff at Costco, Makro or similar.
Generally repeat once a month.
Have a look at this video, and with a bit of regular maintenance, a smelly washing machine should soon be a thing of the past. ... http://www.espares.co...-washing-machine.html
Cleaning out the Detergent drawer might be a good idea too, black mould and washing powder residue can build up in the crevices and although probably not a cause of the problem you describe is well worth doing.

the vinegar method works just fine..
When you have got rid of the smell remember that when you have finished a wash to dry any water from the folds of the door seal and also to leave the main door and the soap tray open so that it can dry out.

Thank you all for your good advice
When I've done my wash I get a cheap pine disinfectant and pour some into the soap dish which goes down into the drum well which mixes with the water left in the well below the drum and stops any smelly bacteria multiplying.
