This house has 'Supataps' a kind of tap popular in the 70's, I think, but not made now. Does replacing them present any problem; I'm thinking, in particular,of whether they'd be metric or noI and whether, if imperial, that presents a problem ?

Same metric/imperial problem applies to replacing the original taps here, which were installed in the 1950s. Some of those need replacing too.

I have to agree that it's sometimes easier to remove the sink.
Much the same as any pillar tap,Fred. If you don't remove the sink, then you'll need either tap spanners or a box spanner to get up there........... or a basin wrench......

The theory of tap replacement is simple - but in practice it is a nightmare because of the generally tight and inaccessible spaces you are faced with. You will find to succeed you need two extra joints in each elbow. So you might actually find it simpler to replace the entire sink / basin unit when you do the job.
It's normal to fix the taps onto the sink along with the waste befoe the sink goes into place on the wall or in the worktop.
Getting fixings that work with both metric and imperial is easy, look at online providers like screwfix if your local DIY isn't stocking.
Why do all these taps need replacing?

Don't worry about metric vs imperial. The backnuts will be imperial 1/2-inch.
Conventional mixer and pillar taps still tend to be 1/2" today.
I emailed Screwfix.com for some information. I got a very nice reply thanking me for my interest - but informing me that they are not, in fact, a dating agency.
