Use a piece of parcel tape or sellotape smooth it down and then pull off. Takes off all the dust and brings up the pile (if there is any) of the fabric.

Hoover them.
can of compressed air and blow the dust off or a powerful hairdryer
I have heard rub with a slice of white bread,or a damp cloth wrung out so that it's nearly dry.
Vac with attachments or brush down. Fill a bucket with warm water and add some washing machine liquid. Soak a cloth and wring out .. wipe down.

You haven't said whether they are small or large shades or given any indication of the material from which they have been made.

Please advise before I or others post further.

Also, in which way would you like to make them look worse after dusting them?
Remove the fabric with a pair of scissors or knife and carefully place in the bin along with any dust clinging to it.
Purchase new suitable lampshade material from the haberdashery shop.
Sew the new material onto old lampshade frame in the same manner as the previous material used to be.
Viola !
Old geezer can you really make musical instruments out of old lampshades?
If you blow it right.
:)
We've got a large fluffy cat, I find that by taping him to the end of a broom stick you can do the ceiling lights in-situ as his grasping at them tends to get in all the nooks and crannies!

Thank you for all your replies - made me laugh especially Old_Geezers suggestion!!

Kathryn - thank you its worked brilliantly!
Don't vacuum them. Take them down, half fill the bath with luke-warm water plus a little washing liquid and give them A VERY SOFT scrub. Wash off "soap" and hang out to dry. Vacuum cleaners do not remove very fine particles of dust, especially if in-grained.

Thanks solvitquick, I used parcel tape and then gave them a brush with a clothes brush.....look like new now!
Good, yelenots in finding the solution from Kathyan - I honestly did not believe it was the real solution. However you have proven brilliant Kathyan right. I am very pleased for you that your problem has been solved. I shall bear K's answer in mind. Just shows that we can all go on learning via this great web-site. xxx
solvitquick...I go along with every word you have said.
