It looks like something from The Quatermass Experiment. Has anyone tried a Geiger Counter on it?

Yes it is some sort of a fungi about the size of a tennis ball.
Sorry you can't see the pictures rowanwitch is it me that has posted them incorrectly?
It's the first time I have tried to post a picture here.

I haven't handled it but did give it a poke with a stick, it is quite hard. I was mainly concerned as to weather it was poisonous to my dogs.
But at the same time didn,t want to destroy it in case it was rare.

it is a morrell mushroom. if you pick it before it gets too slimy it is very good to eat
