TV companies must put adverts in the papers, requesting only thick people to take part in programs. On the Lotto program a few weeks ago, one young chap was asked "Where is the Algarve ?" His three choices were :: Portugal, Spain and Ireland. He got all excited and said that he had been there on holiday recently and gave the answer as Spain ! If I was as thick as these...

what age were the contestants?
Question Author
35 to 45 years old

Um! there do seem to be quite a few WW1 fighters in Famous5s link!¬
It is amazing how much the National Curriculum does not (and cannot possibly) include and my own two daughters, who are very intelligent young woman, may well have got that wrong.
Does that make me a bad parent?? We all cannot know everything.

Sorry mick, forgot your question,

'No I don't think it is'

But, if it makes youhappy...............
if you don't know it - you don't know it. It doesn't mean you're thick.
I bet nerves play a big part too, I know I can sit here for hours happily at home, guessing stuff, but put me on the TV and my brain would dissolve.
The first airborne combat began in WWI, so if you knew about that but not Douglas Bader specifically it wouldn't be that stupid. After all, when did the Red Baron fly?

Besides, you can forget a lot when the cameras are staring at you. Until you've tried it and been in a TV quiz for yourself, don't knock those who are brave enough -- or foolish enough? -- to have tried it.

Well it certainly could not have been nerves as the person who dodged the question walked away with £11,200.
Your question was more about the person who got it wrong, wasn't it?
im sure their are lots of questions that other people know the answer to but you don't, doesn't make you thick does it???? Every question is easy if you know the answer
Why the assumption that such knowledge is what we learn in school, hence blaming the National Curriculum? I can't remember ever learning much of my general knowledge in school. In school, I learned to read and from that, and keeping my ears and eyes open, I have an almost inexhaustable supply of trivial facts. BTW, I'm no fan of the NC, having spent many years trying to make sense of it!
another one didn't know that Edmund Hillary was first to climb Everest. I thought that was common knowledge.
No matter how obvious the answer is, if you brain won't throw the answer out immediately when you need it too, does that mean you are thick? No it doesn't.
Many times, the answer is on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't get it out in the time allowed. Am I thick? No I'm not.
Yes, quiz shows test recall as much as knowledge. Some people just seem not to be able to recall what they know, at least not easily and quickly, or not when under pressure. At other times your mind can get in a muddle, and something you should know you just can't get a handle on for whatever reason. Examples including muddling two people up with similar names, or just pressure making you doubt yourself...

On the other hand, quiz shows that give away cash prizes have a tendency to pick people less likely to win those prizes. Either way, until you have been on a quiz show or at least tried to get on one it's unfair to presume stupidity. It's more likely to be trouble coping with pressure, to some extent.
Should have asked if he was "legless" whenever he flew in battle.
i thought one of the answers given on the new lottery quiz last Saturday was even worse. Who was King Arthur's wife. Answer MAID MARIAN.
What was the world's highest mountain before Everest was discovered?
Waits to see if that old trick works.
