Lieutenants and Generals

Why is the British Army rank of Major General lower than the rank of Lieutenant General , when Lieutenant is lower than Major?

I've often wondered about that as well Fred.
Because lieutenant wen used as a prefix means one rank below, e.g. lieutenant-general is one rank below general and lieutenant-colonel is one rank below colonel.
