Tiramisu is one of Italy’s most famous desserts, coffee cream and a little splash of alcohol, usually amaretto, make tiramisu a very luxurious dessert full of rich flavours. Tiramisu translates as pick me up and what a wonderful pick me up it is, so if you need a little lift after a hard day’s work look no further.

Italians are very particular when it comes to a good cup of coffee particularly espresso.  So of course their most famous dessert tiramisu is soaked in coffee, it is the coffee that makes tiramisu tiramisu, otherwise what kind of pick me up would it be.

This lavish desert is perfect for a sophisticated grown up dinner party served with a delicious wine, or if you leave out the amaretto,  like the original recipe than it is a wonderful family dessert that your children can enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 120g ladyfingers
  • 155 ml strong brewed coffee, room temperature
  • 6 tbsp amaretto
  • 200g cream cheese, softened
  • 336 g double cream
  • 5 g cocoa powder, for dusting

Method

  1. Place the lady fingers in a flat bottom bowl.
  2. Stir together coffee and amaretto until smooth. Spoon most of the mixture over the ladyfingers but leave some to flavour the cream.
  3. Whip the double cream.
  4. In a large bowl, beat together cream cheese, and add the remaining coffee mix. Fold in double cream. Spread mixture over soaked ladyfingers. Cover and chill for 15 minutes.
  5. Dust with cocoa just before serving.
