Savoy Cabbage And Bacon Salad

Savoy cabbage and bacon salad is a perfect side dish on a cold winter’s day, when you are craving something fresh but want something with warmth and rich flavours to comfort you during the cold months. Savoy cabbage has a wonderful flavour that is slightly nutty, sweet and it is very tender compared to other cabbages. It is simple and quick to cook it only takes a few minutes and you don’t need to do much as the flavours are delicious. Smoked bacon adds a warm rich smoky flavour to the cabbage and a little chilli and garlic adds some heat, but if you don’t like garlic or chilli you can leave them out.

Savoy cabbage is very nutritious, with lots of health benefits. Cabbage is known to reduce risk of cancer especially lung and breast cancer, as well as having no cholesterol, research shows that cabbage may reduce cholesterol. Cabbage has high levels of vitamin C which does wonders for your immune system, reduces risk of heart disease, lowers blood pressure and is great for healthy young looking skin.  As well as looking after yourself inside and making your skin radiant cabbage is low in fat and great food if you are trying to trim your waist line.

If you are trying to eat less salt you can soak the bacon in cold water for 2 minutes to reduce the salt content. You can also use a little olive oil instead of butter if you are trying to be good.

Savoy cabbage and bacon salad is perfect with a roast dinner or as a lunch served with croutons on top. The sweet smoked flavours complement pork, chicken or beef beautifully. Savoy cabbage is a tasty winter vegetable that is readily available during the winter months; their delicious flavours should be taken full advantage of. 

Ingredients

  • 1 Savoy cabbage
  • 120g smoked streaky bacon, chopped
  • 40g butter
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped

Method

  1. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage. Place the cabbage in a pan of water and bring to the boil. Remove the cabbage and shred it.
  2. Melt butter in a pan and fry the bacon add the garlic and chilli, once they are cooked add the cabbage and mix together.
