I have never used Facebook and I certainly do not "hate" it. I have family and friends who do use it, however, and they seem to like it. If a "non-hater" can be allowed an opinion, I think it is a splendid thing that Mark Zuckerberg proposes doing. More power to his elbow!

Bill Gates did something similar. I think Mr Z should be congratulated.
Question Author
I believe Bill Gates still does. Something like 95% of his income goes to good causes.

It's lovely...
It's fantastic. I know not everyone likes Mr Z, but he should be applauded for this.
We often read of extremely rich people buying houses they have no intention of living in, making their neighbours lives difficult by excavating beneath the house to create a ridiculous basement area, spending silly money on silly things, etc.
I think this is great. Well done him.
Question Author
Have you seen Social Network? Mr Z appears to make working for facebook an enjoyable experience.
I haven't seen it, but would like to. I think Google also try to make it fun to go work for them. I wish every company did!

No dress code and toys in the office so you can skateboard to the printer :-)
Just because he is giving some of his fortune away doesn't make me want to expose my privacy to his invasive programme.
Question Author
Hopkirk - you don't have to give real information when you join.
Ummmmm you are incredibly naive about FB. For a start why go on FB with a 'made up' profile -the whole point is to interact with your friends.

Secondly FB is invasive and even if you set your privacy to the highest setting it is dependent on your friends and friends of friends and sometimes even totally random.. I know you refuse to believe any of it but I discussed this with some friends the other day and they agree -they get friends requests from random people they have never contacted directly, and now posts on their wall.
I have no idea how or why you appeared on my wall and also informed me you were now working at 8888 and 888888 -believe me I have no interest in you what-so-ever ans similar things could cause accusations of stalking -more trouble
Facebook causes all sorts of trouble. OH got a picture of a mutual female friend on his wall surrounded in a heart with 'the story of your friendship - just because he had been tagged in a few photos she's not even on his friends list -this could have caused tons of trouble if I had not known the backstory. Mark Zuckerberg is making a huge living and good on him - he may struggle in a few years time with his decision as good things don't last forever and I seriously think FB will fizzle out in favour of Twitter and other social media sites -I hope he has set up a trust fund for his children.

I'm not naive....I just don't care.

What would be naive is me believing you haven't searched for me.
I have used FB pretty much since its launch, I have never had an issue with it. The thing I have noticed is a kind of snobbery, many seem to think they are above social media, especially FB. Makes me laugh :-)

If people are sensible with their security it is as safe as necessary.
Ummmmm I'm not making this personal just showing up FB for what it is.

As for me looking for you on FB -How can you search for someone when you don't know their name? If you search 'retrochic' on FB you will get random people including a shop that has nothing to do with me.

Like I said - I hope MZ has put some money aside for his kids future.
Hmmmm! I'm surprised Mikey is praising him.

I can't be bothered, but I bet I could find you on FB in ten minutes and post your name and a picture in this thread, from random scraps of info you've posted on here Retrochic.

No-one is 'unfindable' there - to think so is kidding yourself - but if you treat it as a 'semi-public' space and use it carefully, it's a perfectly safe environment.

I too use Facebook - it was very useful when a casual friend went to work at Disney
Other than 'bit fed up today' don't ever put your personal life on there
Question Author
Retro - more than once you've hinted at my name by using the Sherlock Holmes reference so please don't bull. You also named Sher not so long ago! So you are clearly seeking people out.

Sunny-dave - I doubt you could -some have tried and got the wrong person. I have a small FB page totally private with approx. 17 friends who are all family members. Even if you do a Google of my real name my FB profile will not come up in search results. So go one - do it- and a) possibly get sued from someone and b) get suspended from AB .

And you get best answer, Pete :-)
Ummm you are totally wrong there -you shot yourself in the foot. I made an off the cuff remark about you not being sherlock holmes and you threw a wobbly telling me your surname and your daughters name -have no idea why. It was then that the penny dropped on the mysterious person who kept popping up in my Page with the ugly ginger bloke lol!

As for Sher - she came up on my FB page and her FB page is her name -its not my blinking fault -and loads of people call each other by their 'real' name on here.

Do you not realise that this probably all comes from the AB FB page when you click 'like' ?
