Other than on toast does it have any other tried and tested ways of being used in food?

Not a food use, but a highly effective contraceptive if one partner 'loves' it and the other 'hates' it - never reach kissing distance, let alone anything else!

Vegemite was originally marketed as Parwill
marmite roast potatoes
stews
on toast with eggs
Stirred into baked beans on toast !
I don't think it's like Vegemite, I have tried that and didn't like it at all. As Dickie says you can mix it with butter to 'soften' taste a bit to see if you like it. That's how I used to give it to the young'uns on soldiers as it can be a rather strong flavour if your not used to it.
On food, in a way: we used to spread it on pigs, because it alleviated some skin conditions they had
Mmmmmm, extra tasty crackling Fred :-)
"and a small amount in with mushrooms when you braise them is a healthy alternative to butter. "

ClaryS, thanks for this good tip. I love Marmite and another way to use it is great. And I love mushrooms sauteed with lots of onions ooooo and marmite added would be sooooo good.
Personally I prefer it on bread rather than toast but each to his own. I always wash out the near empty jar into a soup or casserole. I like it but could live without it - buy it mainly for my husband.
Nigella used it in a pasta which I thought sounded rather fun and I'd quite like a go on it... this thread has reminded me about it!
that sounds goooooooood
