It depends how much money u have really, to part rent/part buy u still need quite a bit of cash, for a start u usually need a deposit. If u are low on cash, really prob best to put yourself on the council list, you may as well do this anyway as this can take some time. You can test other options while waiting. If u are low on cash, really prob best to put yourself on the council list, you may as well do this anyway as this can take some time. You can test other options while waiting. Also get in contact with CSA as soon as, i know people say they are not great, but if its only chance you are going to get to get any support you may aswell, and im pretty sure they dont back pay, so sooner the better. As others said if u work part time then you should be entitled to tax credits, if you already receive these then contact them with change of circs as you should be entitled to more. You must work over 16 hours to claim tax credits, if you work less you may be able to claim income support. As others have said u could go to citizens advice, they will advise you on everything.
momcj, she didn't say part-rent-part-buy, she said part-rent, part-help. I took that to mean Housing Allowance etc. You can be assessed for benefits to see how much help with rent you could get (depends on your age as well as your income). Your local council might also do a deposit guarantee scheme to help you find a property without needing a cash deposit.
go to your local homelessness unit. they can assess your circumstances and let you know your options. however, they may say you are intentionally homeless because you left (unless there was a good reason - domestic violence, for example), and are currently adequately housed as you are staying with family (yes - even if you are sleeping on the sofa). i would get your relatives to 'kick' you out, otherwise they will do almost everything to avoid helping you (as there is so little housing) and try to make you take private rented - which is much more expensive especially if you are working. you are entitled to put your name on the housing register and may get more points due to your circumstances but think before you go in (they will not accept a change of story half way through the process without good reason) and decide how you want to play things. without a deposit, you are in trouble as it costs an arm and a leg to get rented accommodation. good luck x
