Snag Hunting Under Threat From North-Fen Motorway Plans

16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The World of Snag Hunting has sustained another blow as plans were revealed regarding the new North-Fen Motorway to be completed in 2013 which may destroy many prime Snag Hunting locations.

The locations found to the northern end of the Fens are coveted by many Snag Hunters for the abundance of many large “wild,” Snags, some rumoured to be up to 5” long.

Frankie Colverson-Tester, this year’s recently crowned Snag Hunting Champion, commented:

“I think it is appalling for the East Anglia Development Authority to consider destroying such fine Snag Hunting ground without any consultation with the Snag Hunting Society or the wider Snag hunting community. There are youngsters not as fortunate as myself who have never had a chance to Hunt for Snags on those fields which could now be lost forever in 2013.”

The Motorway, to be named the M14 starts at Huntingdon with the widening of the A141 to six lanes until it reaches Chatteris where it will head North-East through Southery and Wereham. The plans show the road heading North before cutting between Little Massingham and Great Massingham before joining up with Wells-Next-the-Sea.

The plans have come under fire from those outside the Snagging community who criticise the plans for their complete bypassing of Kings Lynn, Wisbech, Downham Market, and Swaffham while making no plans to link up the A10 to the new Motorway.

Planners have responded:

“The route was carefully considered and the inclusion of several traveller and caravan sites with park and ride facilities at Boughton,West Acre, Broomsthrope, and Quarles will provide adequate links and bring more tourism to East Anglia. We’re hoping to bring in around 185,000 tourists a week into the area during the summer months”

The plans also include the creation of a 225 square mile distributions centre at Diss to bring a much needed industrial regeneration to the area.

“This automated distribution centre should create several hundred jobs much needed in East Anglia, an area of the UK which seems to have tragically missed out on the benefits of the distribution revolution.”

When questioned about the Snag habitats which may be destroyed by the creation of this motorway the newly formed East Anglia Development Authority offered this response:

“We respect the traditions of the local East Anglian communities and we urge them to understand that the proposed motorway gives more people better access to some of the best Snagging sites in the country such as Swaffham Golf club and the Northern Fens.”
