Christmas Holidays: What to do guide

16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

A Christmas break is the ideal time for friends and family to gather together and enjoy each other’s company. There are many festive activities to embark on or places to go which won’t break the Christmas budget.

Take a trip away:

Enjoy winter walks in the Lake District, relax by the fireside in a local pub and spend an enjoyable Christmas break in Cumbria.  You can enjoy the usual array of festive events from Santa's grotto to pantomimes for the children and late night shopping to Christmas concerts for the adults- all with a stunning backdrop of lakes and snow capped mountains.

If you’re looking to get some Christmas shopping done while you’re away and you want some inspiration you could take advantage of the late night shopping and unique gifts from some traditional Cumbrian shops. With great Lake District attractions for all the family, the question is not what to do but where to start- Whatever the season, whatever the weather you’ll always find something to do in the Lake District.

Christmas time is a time to feel homely so you might choose to take a short trip to Centre Parcs, not too far from home but far enough to feel like you’re away from the chaos that comes with Christmas. Christmas at Centre Parcs is a magical time of year. The forest comes alive with a festive atmosphere and many themed activities to make your short break one to remember.

A holiday at Centre Parcs at any time of year is a brilliant experience, but none more so at Christmas when all villages are transformed into a winter wonderland. After all the bedlam of Christmas shopping etc, you'll be looking forward to a rest, so why not have a Christmas Holiday at Centre Parcs where the peace and tranquillity of the forest will revitalise you.

Winter Wonderland:

Christmas in the Alps is a once in a lifetime experience. Enjoy traditional hot mulled wine served après ski followed by a torch lit decent down the mountain with the evening ending with fireworks as the sun sets.

Switzerland has such a wide vegetation spectrum that in just a few hours, you can experience it from the Mediterranean area to the arctic and the seasons from summer to winter. Experience all the seasons in one trip and take home some memorable photo’s of the picturesque setting. You may want to pack for all seasons and expect the unexpected as the Swiss Alpine flora is especially very varied and admirably still grows under difficult climatic conditions. In the short vegetation time, the sun can warm up itself to over 40°C and sometimes cool down at night to below zero degrees. The biotope in Switzerland can be from desert-like to marshy-wet.

For the perfect winter wonderland the Swiss Alps could be the ideal setting if you want to go further afield this Christmas.
