Myself & a neighbour switched from BG to another gas supplier just before Christmas.
It takes a few weeks for change- over to occur & hasn't happened yet.
In the interim BG has switched us from one tariff to standard tariff which costs twice as much per unit.
That doesn't bother us but just out of interest have all BG customers recently been switched to a standard tariff as part of the Gov.
simplification scheme?
Or are they just having a 'strop' with us cos we finished with them.

It could just be that the tariff you were on has ended, in which case you are put onto the standard tariff.

We were all electric till they installed the gas at the beginning
of December so it would be rather duplicitous for them give you
a tariff for 2 weeks & then double it.
Not that I'd put that past them.
Yes, it's one of the tricks that all suppliers seem to use. When my last two deals come to an end they offered me a so-so deal with a lock in period or an outrageously expensive standard variable rate that nobody in their right mind would ever choose. I declined the lock-in deal and after a bit of looking around chose a better fixed deal elsewhere. However the research and transfer process took around 8 weeks and during this time I was forced to take the outrageous variable rate offer. This sounds very much like what happened to you. I think they are basically milking their customers before they leave and it's another example of where the regulator needs to stop this abuse happening
I know with my supplier Scottish Power that most of their deals have no tie in so it aybe worth phoning to see if they have any. I also find that phoning every 3 months to see if you are still on the best tariff works well
