I think it depends on how badly you want to save. I save very easily because I don't mind cutting back. My mum on the other hand says she wants to try and save but she can't.. it doesn't help that she's always spending!
And how much is enough put by. None of us knows what is going to happen in our lives and when our lives are going to end. And look what has happened to many peoples life savings.
I'm not saying £40 is a reasonable amount... I just don't think £200 is low like Bella said. I was only giving the two extremes. I can manage the £200, phone contract, keeping a car, buying all my own clothes, toiletries etc and still save.
I agree bellazella. But I was thinking perhaps of a 16/17 year old who had just started work on a fairly low wage, hence the minimum bit. An adult on a reasonable wage still living at home would be expected to give me more.
Fifty years ago my sister used to give my mum £10 a month (that would be loads now, with inflation!) and she moaned about it - it was only when she got married and set up her new home that she realised how very little she'd been giving to the household.
When I was 18 and started work my wage after tax was just under £8.00 I gave my mum £3.00 bought my own clothes and paid my own transport costs. How times have changed!! (1965)
Some people can budget and some can't whether they live with their parents or not- erin's done nothing wrong- she's paying to live there- my kids only ever paid £50 per week- quite enough to support an adult unless your excessive.
