Hello all,

A very happy New year to all our Onwards and Downwards crew. I hope you all had a lovely time over Christmas and let yourselves have a treat now and then. I expect we shall gain a few more members this months, well the more the merrier I say.

We welcome anyone serious about losing weight and we offer support and kind thoughts - not magic fixes, just sensible help.

Good Morning All,

I've stayed the same which is okay I guess, well it's not up but you don't get a good feeling about it. Hope you all do better.
Same here Xstitcher. I have been half good but that is not good enough. Should have as better result next week.
Scales claim up 1⅞ lbs, but with no justification. Over the last few days I've seen it rise consistently despite being on or under daily target input since last Friday's excess. It makes no sense some weeks. :-(
ok, I went up by 2 lb over the weekend and lost 1lb by today so im back on the right track.
The problem was I had a rare weekend off work and I sat about doing very little and getting bored and thinking of my hunger, im now back on my 6 day a week working schedule so less time to get hungry.
I am currently obsessed with sweet potato in the form of chips, mash or boiled. Great nutritinal benefits too, packed with vitamin C. On the side with a piece of salmon, chicken or mackrel and a portion of veg. A great after gym evening meal...
Well done Ratter to shift 1lb of the 2lb gain. It is not easy when out of your normal routine.
Jd dinner sounds good. Never tried sweet potato. Have you lost weight if using sweet potato for chips.

Hoorah, 2lbs down at last. I couldn't seem to budge after Christmas, then we had two weeks of constant snow which did me no good whatsoever. I was eating comfort food to keep warm and not walking any further than absolutely necessary. But now its milder I've finally managed to get back to normal life and lost a couple of pounds. Phew.

Welcome Annie and everyone that has returned after Xmas. January is a bad month to get back on track. Well it is for me. We eat because we are miserable with the cold and weather. Now things will look up weatherwise and look forward to the Spring and get a spring in our step. I have bought a sweet potato and will try that as wedges. I know I don't like them boiled as I tried them before. Onwards and Downwards.
You could also slice them thinly and try baking them to get a crisp like effect.....maybe......
Out of interest. If I were to eat a large cream tea with lots of jam and fresh clotted cream, when would those extra calories increase my weight, if I ate that at night would I notice a difference by morning, later in the day or maybe the next day or would it just make it very difficult to lose weight again for the next few days? I dont really understand how it works.

There has to be an immediate weight gain of what you have just eaten, it doesn't disappear once inside you. But it's a dynamic process, one moment you are taking foodstuff in, the next expelling matter. Longer term the high calorie fatty stuff will easily turn into your fat for a net longer term gain. It's difficult to separate the immediate affect from the longer term consequences. It means trying to make sense of weight gain when you've "been good" and weight loss when you've "been naughty" is mind boggling. Best thing to do is limit the treats and concentrate on generally following a good diet. Not worry about what that hypothetical cream tea will do either in the short or longer term.
