Had a bottom back molar out last thursday, difficult to get out. dentist had to cut it in half because top broke away, and he had awful trouble to get it out. anyway I am going mad with the pain still. Rinseing with salt water like told too and taking 2 nurafens( 200 )and 2 paracetamols( 250 ). Trying to hold out so not taking them too much but in between the pain is really intense. My dentist is away so I cannot phone him. But just want to know is this expected.? many thanks
in the circumstances, I'm sure you could speak to another dentist whilst yours is away..
Your Dentist's surgery should be able to give you a same day emergency appointment (with another dentist in the practice) or should be able to give you the telephone number of an emergency dentist in your area.

If not, phone NHS direct (you can google the number) and they will provide you with the telephone numbers of NHS dentists providing emergency cover.

No, it is not normal to be in this much pain after dental work of any kind, so get some help.

Good luck.
It is not uncommon for post-extraction pain to continue like this, especially after a 'traumatic' extraction. You really should return to see a dentist (either your own or another) to exclude the possibility of you having a localised osteitis (dry socket). If this is the case, a sedative dressing can be placed within the extraction socket which will give you pain relief. Other than this there is little more you can do other than take analgesics, as you are doing, and be patient. The socket will usually heal eventually, though it can take time. Hope that it improves soon.

Many thanks for your replies. As long as it is normal I will leave it until thursday, which will be a week and see what it is like then. In the mean time I will just keep taking the tablets.! What makes it worse is the fact I think the dentist must have burnt the underneath of my tongue also a cut where skin is flapping. So that as well is really sore. Am trying to keep it still and not catch it on my teeth.
My sympathies are with you. I hope you get better real soon.
