It's for a float medical secretary (office based in various hospitals) and I have to show them proof of childhood innoculations, which I have done, but now they're saying I need to have a blood test and it's quite far where I have to go for it.  I'm not keen and I've never had to have a blood test for any job, even having worked in medical offices these past 25 years.

Is it me or is it odd needing a blood test just to type in offices? I'm not keen at all and think it's too rigorous.

As others have said why not ask them first for the reason they want the blood test and base your decision on their answer. If it's too far to go, ask if you can get it done locally

Is it for a work based pension?

you ask THEM that

we need to know which test is it for ( Hep B I think quite reasonable) but theemployer does have to say....

Have you asked them?

Either (1) ask them and then decide whether to proceed; or (2) withdraw your application

oh, you need to know what it is for and what the test is...( work based pension, I wd hazard arent allowed to do that)

You could always tell them to go forth, if it bothers you. You are the architect of your own destiny (within ljmits).

Don't take the job then.

I think I'll swerve this job.

Why not ask whoever is asking you to get it done?

It's perfectly acceptable to ask what they are testing for.

Seems a shame to let it put you off before you know why a blood test is needed.

It seems rather a silly little thing to base a make-or-break decision on. Just my personal opinion.

After giving the employer all the proof of childhood inoculations it may be fair to assume that the blood test may be needed for a similar reason.

Ask them!  The job might entail going on to wards.

Probably to check for drugs.

I think it's a normal request for a job in any hospital, especially if you are to be floating between departments.

Personally, I wouldn't let it stand in the way of a job, but if you feel it's not something you are happy with, then I suppose the only answer is to withdraw your application.

Thank you everyone.  I've asked them what the blood test is for and will see their reply.

I hate blood tests as they can never find veins and I am terrified of needles.  But if that was all that stood between me and the job that I really wanted I would be there in minutes

To make blood tests slightly easier, make a conscious effort to drink plenty of water for 24/48 hours beforehand.

Not only are the veins easier to find when you are well hydrated but the results are more definite too. No border line issues.
