1980's O level book about a fugitive who makes a home in a lane!

In 1986 I took o level english lit and we studied a book about a fugitive (possibly in 2nd world war) who made a shelter in a country lane. A book about his fight for survival and keeping hidden. Does anyone ave any idea of the title or author please? As is the way, books that seemed boring at the time come back to haunt you years later!!

Thank you

It looks like it was broadcast as a radio programme in 15 episodes, I don't know if they are still available to listen to.

If it is that book there is a serialisation broadcast on Radio 4 Extra every 9 months or so. I believe it has also been filmed.
Loads of copies of Rogue Male on eBay, both the book and the DVD.
It was a film - starred Peter O'Toole, back in the 1970s I think
Was it Whistle down the Wind by Mary Hayley Bell?
