"tiny creature" doubles up as definition of pupae and pup; then my "ace" as above^^. To take the heart out of "ace" = "ae"

What's the clue?
Clue Icka?
...or, I should say, is that the entire clue?
It helps people answer your thread if you write out the full clue, Ickay. Clue reads

They're at a stage as tiny creature, one disheartened (5).

Apolgies. I posted on the wrong page! The complete clue is: They're at a stage as tiny creature, one disheartened.

One is ace, disheartened is ae.
Stick with this one, Ickay. someone will only copy this thread and link it in your new one if you start it.

Pupae was the answer I thought of. Unless someone says different, if you take the word one and remove the heart of it (On), you're left with the `e' beside the word Pupa.

Thank you for your answers. It now makes sense. Again, my apologies for posting on the wrong page. I'm a bit new to this.
