Here it is, Making its SAB Debut Sports 'n' All: The Blog

15:50 Fri 29th Jun 2007 |

Hello SABers and welcome to the first Sports 'n' All blog/review/general rant. This will pretty much involve a look at the week's sporting developments and the general situation in the world of sport.

Rather predictably, the first topic is tennis, more specifically the use of hawkeye technology at Wimbledon. In a rather adventurous move for a tournament normally far too concerned with tradition, players will now be able to question line judges' decisions. Yes it means a short delay while the TV screen changes and you see a computer animated dot moving around on a green box representing the court to see if the ball was in or out. But it might just be worth it to see the look on the hapless line judge's face as they realise they've been made to look like a fool in front of millions of people. Unfortunately all this technology couldn't save Tim Henman, who has crashed out of Wimbledon, but as usual he's done a good deal better than a whole string of average British players.

Moving on to the national sport, football! Now I don't know if it's just me but transfer fees have got beyond my comprehension. How can any player be worth much over ten million pounds, really Anyway Tottenham don't agree with me, that's for sure. They have just put pen to paper to bring Charlton striker Darren Bent to White Hart Lane for an eye watering 16.5 million. To put that into perspective, you could buy very nearly 20 Bugatti Veyrons (the fastest production car) for that sort of money. Or, alternatively, you could buy 15,000 sq ft Carlton House in Highgate, London with a 50 ft long ballroom, nine bedroom suites, all with Italian marble bathrooms, a leisure complex with swimming pool, sauna and 12-person Turkish Bath. Oh and it's also got a vehicle lift down to its four car garage and it's the sixth most expensive house in the country. Are you Spurs fans still thinking you got a good deal

I don't how many of you people out there have seen the Hatton fight against Castillo last weekend, but it was very impressive. It wasn't even a scrappy drawn out affair, Hatton took his opportunities and made light work of a boxer who is widely regarded as one of the best. You'd think that with performances like that fighters would be queuing up to take Hatton on, but it looks like it'll take at least 5 million to get Floyd Mayweather, arguably the best welterweight in the world. Having said that, anyone who saw Mayweather taking on Oscar De La Hoya recently will know that hype, glitz and the mighty dollar do the talking in America. Hatton's street fighting ferocity might just take some of them by surprise, and I wouldn't bet against him upsetting the applecart if one of the Americans accepts the challenge.

The end of this blog, or whatever you want to call it, approaches and it just remains for me to make a quick comment about the world of F1. Lewis Hamilton is doing us Brits proud and currently heads the championship. He's a very talented driver in a surprisingly competitive car and there's no reason that he won't be challenging for the title at the end of the season. He just needs to keep that focus and not let the money, expensive free gifts and public adulation go to his head. I don't know what you SABers think but he has the potential to be a future champion. I've probably gone and jinxed him now, but it's good to see Brits challenging for top places.

That's the sporting week as I've seen it feel free to let me know what you think!
