networking 2 pcs

i have 2 pcs, one is new p4 and has win XP and the other is p2 and has win98 upgrade. they both have usb ports free, can i just link them this way with a crossover cable? or do i need ethernet cards...

Does anyone know of a british company that is quoted on the stock exchange in london, that makes lifts and elevators for public buildings?thanks
