photoshop will not allow me to paint, patch etc etc

HI I have photoshop cs4. i works fine, but sometimes just decides to stop allow me to paint or use the plaster tool or the clone tool etc etc, it just sudden stops making its mark, if that makes sense...

Hi I have photoshop cs4 and it has been workign fine, now suddenly today it will no longer save in jpeg format. when you go to save as and select from the drop downs there are half the options...
