formating digital camera video for t.v. playback

I have a philps dvd player / recorder that uses dvd +r (and dvd +rw) discs. I am trying to play back videos taken on a digital camera. I wish to know what format i need to to format the disc and also...

transferring photos to dvd to watch on tv

I have transferred my digital photos to dvd and cd in order to view them on tv but with both metods I just get the message "unsupported file". how can I overcome this? (windows xp)..thanks
