Smart Television - Connecting To Internet.

The Smart system finds the talktalk network easily but when trying to connect to the router (to enable wifi) the system always says that the internet is not connected. Any ideas anyone....

Can a Smart Television be operated without the Smart option. i.e. used without being plugged into a router - with the signal coming from the TV arial as a non- smart TV would?
